Chapter 28 A Trip Outside

Tim let out a worried sigh. “We’re incredibly lucky to have a place to stay.”

“I know that,” Dane replied.

He glanced at Henry sleeping on the bed. “But when Mr. Henry wakes up and finds out his place belongs to someone else now, he’s probably going to lose his mind.”

The two men talked for a bit longer. In the end, they made a simple plan. Dane would watch Henry for now, while Tim went to another bedroom to get some rest.

With their help around the property, Robin suddenly found herself with a lot less work to do.

Someone pulled weeds in the vegetable garden behind the house. Someone watered the fruit trees in the orchard. The chickens and ducks in the front yard were fed every day. And to Robin’s surprise, Dane was actually a great cook. Now every morning when she woke up, a hot meal was already waiting for her. Life had become incredibly comfortable.

“Ms. Robin! The chickens laid eggs!”

Robin had just woken up from her afternoon nap when Ella rushed in excitedly. She held a freshly laid egg tightly in her hand. It was still warm.

“Not bad,” Robin said with a smile.

She walked outside to take a look. The first group of chicks and ducklings she had bought earlier were now fully grown. They ran happily across the sandy ground.

Starting tomorrow, they would have a steady supply of fresh eggs.

“Go put it away, Ella,” Robin said. “Dane, you two get ready. We’re heading out in a bit.”

Ella froze. “We’re going out?”

Robin’s decision was sudden.

“Yes,” Robin said calmly. “We’re going to pick up a kid.”

Tim walked over and frowned. “Robin, I’ll go with you.”

“No need,” Robin replied. “The three of us are enough. Someone has to stay here. Besides, if we all leave, who’s going to watch your boss?”

After more than ten days together, everyone had grown familiar with each other. Robin pulled on her jacket. “Anyway, it’s a good chance to see what things look like outside now.”

As time passed, the internet was slowly falling apart. The connection between people and the outside world was breaking down little by little.

When the servers finally crashed and the internet disappeared completely, humanity would truly be cut off and alone.

Robin could still get online for now. The zoo area had advanced facilities, and the nearby service station hadn’t been destroyed. But the number of people online was dropping fast.

The clearest sign was that the video views for “Lorekeeper” were falling sharply.

Robin still had no idea who this mysterious Lorekeeper really was. Yet even now, he continued uploading videos every single day.

Robin tossed the car keys to Dane. “You drive.”

“Oh, okay.”

Dane blinked in surprise and quickly followed her.

Tim stood there watching the three of them leave. His feelings were complicated.

The huge villa suddenly felt a little empty.

After a long moment, he sighed quietly and shook his head. “Guess I’m getting old,” he muttered to himself with a bitter smile. “This is a young person’s world now.”

The real outbreak had started in the early hours of the morning. At that time, the zoo had no visitors. Because of that, they only ran into one or two zombies along the way.

Ella leaned over the back of her seat and asked curiously, “Ms. Robin, where exactly is that kid you mentioned?”

Dane couldn’t help joining in. “If he’s really just a kid, he must be very young. What if he’s in danger?”

Robin answered casually, “Not that young. He’s already three years old.”

“How old?”

“Three?!”

Chapter 28 A Trip Outside

The two of them shouted at the same time.

Three years old! Is that even possible?

A kid that young could barely talk clearly yet!

Robin looked at their shocked faces and immediately knew they had misunderstood something. But she didn’t explain.

Instead, she decided to let them be surprised later.

“Head to the predator zone,” Robin said.

“Got it.”

Dane turned the steering wheel. The car sped down the wide road and soon reached the area.

After they got out, Robin opened the trunk and pulled out several weapons–baseball bats and shovels. She handed them to the two men.

Then she walked straight toward one of the animal cages. Clearly, she knew exactly where she was going. But when she arrived, she froze. The once sturdy cage now had a huge hole torn through it.

Inside, it was completely empty.

Snowy was gone.

“Ms. Robin, your friend is here?” Dane asked, confused as he watched her.

Ella glanced up at the sign on the wall.

“It says a white tiger was supposed to be kept here. Why is there nothing inside now?”

Dane gave a bitter little laugh. “Humans can barely take care of themselves right now, let alone animals. That tiger probably got too hungry and broke out.”

Ella shivered. “Then what if we run into that white tiger? Wouldn’t that be really dangerous? And this is the predator zone. What if other animals escaped too?”

“They didn’t,” Robin said coldly.

Dane and Ella didn’t know the details, but Robin remembered something from her previous life. After the zombie virus broke out, experts discovered a strange phenomenon. Some powerful animals suddenly fell into a deep sleep that lasted one to two months. During that time, they didn’t eat or drink. But when they woke up again, their strength and defenses became far greater than before.
