It was the little boy who was with that woman yesterday—the child her husband had with the other woman.
Seeing how pitiful the boy looked, Ella couldn’t help but to soften her tone. “Hey, kid. Why aren’t you with that lady? What are you doing here?”
Robin didn’t say anything, but she watched him as well, waiting for an answer.
Yesterday, his smooth, innocent–looking manipulation had made quite an impression. Now, she was interested to see what he’d say.
The boy shrank back slightly, hesitating,
Henry was already losing patience.
Before the apocalypse, he’d grown up in a wealthy family. Beneath the polished surface of those powerful families lurked endless scandals and ugly power struggles. One thing he’d always despised most was the children born from affairs. Watching the boy stand there, stammering and refusing to get to the point, only irritated him further.
“Kid, when we ask you a question, just answer it. Why are you dragging this out?”
Perhaps Henry’s tone was too harsh. The boy glanced at him, looking frightened. Even his voice trembled. “I… I…”
Ella couldn’t stand seeing that. She shot Henry a reproachful look. “Mr. Henry, he’s just a child. Why are you being so aggressive?”
Henry rolled his eyes dramatically.
Ella crouched down slightly and spoke gently, “Kid, don’t be scared. He’s just got a sharp tongue. Did you get lost? Do you want me to take you back?”
The boy immediately shook his head, resisting hard. “I don’t want to go back!”
Ella blinked. “Why not?”
The boy bit his lower lip. After a long pause, he finally spoke, “I… I don’t want to stay with Ma’am anymore. Can I come with you instead?”
Robin raised an eyebrow.
Oh? So this is what he’s after
Ella looked puzzled. “Why?”
“Ma’am doesn’t seem to like me…”
His voice cracked as tears welled up, full of grievance. “I can tell she’s unhappy whenever she’s with me. Maybe I should just leave and stay far away from her
“Heh.”
Dylan said nothing, but the look in his eyes said everything.

Ella genuinely didn’t know how to handle a crying child “Don’t be upset. Maybe she doesn’t dislike you-”
Before she could finish, Henry cut her off. “Of course she doesn’t like you. You’re her husband’s child with the other woman. Your mom destroyed her marriage and gave birth to you. She probably hates your guts. Why would she possibly like you?”
Ella glared at him. “Mr. Henry, be
still a child! Why would you say something like that to him?”
Henry scoffed. “Ella, don’t put children on a pedestal just because they’re young. Being young doesn’t mean being stupid. Sometimes that harmless appearance is exactly what makes them effective. Kids know perfectly well how to use their advantages.”
The boy’s face immediately turned pale.
Looking at the boy, Henry continued, “Besides, if you weren’t around, that lady would probably be living a much easier life in the apocalypse. Now she’s stuck taking care of a burden with no survival skills. You two aren’t even related by blood. The fact that she’s been looking after you at all is already remarkable. If she were truly heartless, she’d have left you for the zombies a long time ago.
“You’ve survived until now because of her. She’s already done more than enough for you. Even if you’re a kid, you should know how to be grateful. You’re not actually expecting her to love you the same way your parents did, are you?”
“Mr. Henry!”
Ella was really angry now. “Why would you say something like that?!”
To a kid who’d lost both parents, those words cut deeper than anyone
“Oh, do you think I shouldn’t say it?”
realized.
Henry laughed. “Ella, don’t underestimate kids. Yeah, he looks pitiful. But think carefully about what I just said. Whether that lady likes him or not, he’s still alive. Now that Robin left those vending machines for Ravenholt Base, his future won’t be bad either. And yet he’s standing here saying all this in front of us. Why? Because he’s trying to make us feel sorry for him. I’ve seen tricks like this more times than I can count.
“Yesterday, he put on that same pathetic act in front of a crowd and said manipulative crap. I let it slide then. But now he’s come looking for us personally. At that point, I don’t see any reason to be nice.”
Robin looked at Henry with surprise. She honestly hadn’t expected him to read the situation so clearly this time.
