After estimating the distance, the group moved deeper into the ruins. About 180 feet in, they began a large- scale search.
Pal looked at Sevyn. “Call out their names.”
Sevyn took a deep breath. “Lydia! Ryan! Can you hear me?!
“Is anyone down there? If you can hear me, answer me!”
At that moment, Robin found herself desperately missing Oscar.
That kid’s ability was mental detection. He could accurately locate both zombies and living humans nearby.
If he were here, everything would be much simpler.
Then again, why couldn’t she have gotten an ability that useful?
She currently possessed three abilities. Her ice and lightning abilities were both combat–oriented. As for spatial abilities, they didn’t really count as hers, since they came with the system.
In a corner of the ruins, a little boy lay flat on his back. His face was covered in dust.
One of his legs was pinned beneath a massive slab of fallen debris, but the rest of his body remained unharmed.
Because a woman was hunched over him, using her own body as a shield. The heavy rubble had come crashing down, but she had blocked it all with her back.
A jagged steel rebar protruded diagonally from the wreckage, piercing straight through the left side of her lower abdomen.
It was strange.
The collapse had been powerful enough to pulverize reinforced concrete and snap solid steel bars. Yet her fragile arms and flesh–and–blood body had somehow withstood all of that force, protecting her child completely.
“Mom…”
The boy licked his cracked lips. “I’m thirsty. I want some water…”
The steel bar piercing her abdomen felt ice–cold. Half her body had already gone numb.
Fortunately, there was almost no light here. Her son couldn’t see the horrific wound in her stomach.
The woman forced a weak smile and soothed him softly. “Be good, Ryan. Just hold on a little longer. Your dad will be back soon…”
“Will Dad really come back?”
In the darkness, Ryan Collier stared upward with wide eyes. “Mom, I can’t feel my leg anymore. Can you check if it’s still there?”
The question instantly brought tears to Lydia Collier’s eyes.

“It’s there. Of course it’s there. Your leg is perfectly fine. It’s just a little injured. Don’t worry. Your dad will be
here soon to rescue us.”
“Mom, I’m so sleepy… I wanna go to sleep…”
“No… no, Ryan. Listen to me. Your dad will come back to save us. You can’t fall asleep. If you do, your dad might not be able to find us… Don’t you want water?”
Lydia suddenly remembered something. “Feel around nearby. I remember your water bottle still had some water left in it. I’m thirsty too. Don’t fall asleep. Help me find the water bottle, okay?”
“Okay…”
Ryan slowly stretched out his arm and began feeling around in the darkness.
It was completely dark and he couldn’t see anything. His legs were pinned, limiting how far he could reach.
After a long while, his fingertips finally brushed against something.
It felt cool and slightly soft.
Ryan paused. Then realization struck. It must be the strap attached to his water bottle.
“Mom! I found it! I found the bottle…”
Excitement immediately filled his voice. Hooking a finger through the strap, he tried pulling it toward himself.
But it wouldn’t budge.
Instead, another force seemed to be pulling from the opposite side.
“This is my water bottle!” Ryan said angrily. “I don’t care who you are. Let go of it!”
Lydia’s heart skipped a beat. She hadn’t even realized someone else was trapped nearby.
Ryan tried to yank the bottle back, but he was just a kid. In his current condition, he had very little strength. Before long, he could clearly feel the bottle being slowly pulled away by the other person.
“I said it’s mine!
