The whip’s surface was

caked with drice, dark reddishblack stains Blood, unmistakably.

His eyes lit up the instant he passed Robin.

He raised a loose fist to his mouth and let out an exaggerated; performative cough. You’re new around here?

It wasn’t hard to see why she’d caught his eye.

Robin looked like she’d stepped in from a completely different world. Everything about her was jarringly, almost offensively out of place against the grimy, cramped surroundings.

Where everyone else in the apocalypse wore their suffering on their faces, gaunt and sallow and hollowed out. Robin was luminous. Her skin was clear and plump, her figure tall and striking, her face breathtakingly beautiful. Standing where she stood, she was practically blazing.

The man’s gaze crawled over her from head to toe, slow and utterly shameless. His throat moved on its own.

A woman like this hadn’t crossed his path since the world ended, especially one this clean and this put- together.

Just looking at her lit something hot and ugly in his chest.

So you really are new.He dragged the back of his hand across his mouth, barely catching himself in time.

He arranged his face into something selfimportant and superior. Then why are you wandering around instead of staying where you belong?

This base isn’t a place you can just roam freely. Stumble into the wrong area and the consequences will be more than you can handle.

Robin took one step back. Disgust moved through her eyes like a cold current.

Years of hauling garbage had soaked into the man’s very pores. He radiated a thick, sour, fermented stench that turned the air around him into something almost physical. His hair hadn’t been washed in what looked like months. It lay plastered to his scalp in greasy, matted clumps, the skin beneath coated in a heavy film of oil and grey dust, a customfitted helmet of pure filth.

His face shone with the same slick grease. When his lips pulled back, his teeth announced themselves with a deep, sour yellow buildup that reached far enough to be smelled on its own.

He caught the disgust in her eyes, clear as day. Something mean and wounded rose in his face. The rage that followed was nearly instant. What little dignity he still carried had just taken a direct hit, and he felt every inch of it.

What’s your problem?!he snapped.

He reached out before his anger could find better words, moving to close his filthcaked fingers around Robin’s arm.

The stench surged the moment he inoved.

Robin stepped back again, Move,” she said, flat and cold.

Oh. you

think you’re something? His temper cracked wide open. Where do you think you’re going?

You’re in Heningford now, so drop the attitude. His voice dropped into something thick and mean. Women like you only have one use out here, and you’d better start wrapping your head around that.”

He didn’t stop to wonder how she’d stayed so clean through all of this.

All he knew was that the old rules were gone.

The apocalypse had written new ones, and he intended to collect in every word.

Something like her hadn’t walked into his life in a very long time. The universe had set her right in front of him, and he had every intention of taking what it was offering.

His eyes practically glowed with something feverish and vile, his thoughts galloping somewhere dark and predatory.

Robin shot one brief, quiet glance behind her. Then her leg snapped forward in a single clean, devastating strike.

The kick landed square in his chest before his lustfogged brain could register that anything was even happening.

A blur. A shadow. A flash of motion at the edge of his/vision, and then his chest caved inward with a deep; reverberating crack.

The next instant, his body launched backward through the air entirely against his will. His eyes went wide with pure shock.

Something hot and coppersweet surged up his throat, and every organ in his torso felt like it had been shoved off its axis. He hit the ground with a crash that rattled his bones down to the marrow, landing in a crumpled heap too dazed to tell which way was up.

His vision swam in dark, rolling waves.

Before it cleared, something cold and razorsharp pressed firmly against his throat.

r

Robin stood over him with her back to the light. Her face was cast in shadow, unreadable. But her eyes cut right through the darkness: pure, undisguised contempt. I dare you to say that again.

He didn’t dare make a single sound.
