Chapter 439 It’s Useless
She simply hadn’t considered–him worth the effort.
“Ms. Neel, um…”
The man scratched the back of his head and pushed out a hollow, uncomfortable laugh.

Robin dropped her gaze to the guard still crumpled on the ground. Her voice came out flat and detached. “I’ll leave him breathing too. But I have one condition.”
The man’s heart kicked hard. “What…”
Robin turned. Her finger pointed directly at the unconscious bearded man lying off to the side. “I want him.”
“Him…”
The man’s face pulled into something strained and uncertain. “That’s… a bit of a complicated ask…” Robin turned back around and raised her foot, angling it deliberately over the guard’s head.
“Wait!” The man’s eyes went wide.
He arranged his expression into something pained and apologetic. “Ms. Neel, this genuinely isn’t my call. My job is to keep an eye on you. Everything else is above my authority.”
“Langston can make the call.”
Robin’s eyes narrowed. “Tell him the bearded man is an old acquaintance of mine. I don’t care how the paperwork gets handled. I want him at my door by tonight. In exchange, I’ll stay put and stop wandering.”
It wasn’t a request dressed up as one. It was a directive, delivered without a single concession to courtesy, As Langston’s personally appointed subordinate, nobody had ever spoken to him quite like that before. But this was Robin.
Northreach Base had flagged her directly, and that flag carried weight that outranked his wounded pride by a mile. He forced a serviceable smile. “I’ll relay your message to the commander right away. As for this man here…”
He glanced at the guard still folded on the ground. “Ms. Neel, you’re clearly someone of tremendous standing. People like this really aren’t worth your energy. Things are chaotic right now, and some people just lose control of themselves. It’s the world we’re living in…”
Robin was already done with the conversation.
This was just the reality of things. The apocalypse had eaten through humanity’s moral foundation one piece at a time, until nothing remained but the law of the strong feeding on the weak. Every structure that had once shielded the vulnerable had long since turned to dust.
The weak had become everyone’s plaything, men and women alike.

She turned and walked away without another word.
The man finally exhaled
The moment Robin was back at her quarters, he wasted no time pushing her message up the chain to Langston.
“She wants a man? A man from the garden detail Langston’s brow knitted as the report landed. “What’s her connection to him?”
“She didn’t say,” the subordinate answered evenly. “Only that he was an old acquaintance.”
“I see…”
Something slow and thoughtful settled across Langston’s face.
“One more thing.” the subordinate added, as if just remembering. “Commander, from what we observed, Robin doesn’t appear to be running low on supplies at all.”
Langston’s attention sharpened. “Tell me.”
The subordinate laid out the whole sequence: Robin asking Romulus for directions, Romulus leading her to the garden, and Robin producing a fresh dinner roll and a sealed pack of Oreos without the slightest hesitation.
“She handed out dinner rolls and Oreos on a casual stroll?”
Langston’s eyebrows climbed, and something almost/envious flickered across his face.
Those were luxury items even in his own home.
Robin had pressed them into a garbage hauler’s hands like they were nothing.
The more he turned it over, the heavier his interest in this group became. “Someone in that group has a storage space ability,” he said, his voice quiet and certain.
“And whatever they’re carrying, it’s well stocked. Nobody hauls around food that bulkyunless they have the space to spare.”
His subordinate trod carefully. “So… what would you like to do?”
“She’s not someone you make an enemy of,” Langston said, low and deliberate. “She only asked for the man?”
“Just him.”
“Then give him to her.” Langston paused. “Actually, tell her I’d like another meeting tomorrow, if she’s free,”
“Understood.”
That evening, the bearded man was brought to Robin’s door looking thoroughly rattled and deeply
