Vance eventually ran into Rebecca on campus. By then, his grandmother had been recovering for a week.
He looked noticeably worn out. Irene was the most important person in his life. Even with a caregiver, he visited every day, eager to spend more time with her and bring her the things she could eat.
School, part–time job, and hospital visits stretched him thin. He had never been talkative, and now he was even quieter.
Still, things were different this time. Rebecca remembered how, in the original senior year, he had been consumed by gray despair.
The person she loved most in the world was about to pass away, and there was nothing he could do. Rebecca could fully understand that feeling. In her own life, her grandma and she had only had each
other.
That was why she had secretly helped him back then. Now, although he looked tired, there was no dead- eyed hopelessness in his gaze.
It was raining that day. They met on the stairs of the teaching building. Vance hadn’t brought an umbrella and came running up. His hair was wet and plastered to his forehead, making his eyes look especially
bright.
“Rebecca?” His face lit up. “Heading to dance practice?”
“Yes.” She hesitated, then asked, “I heard your grandmother is in the hospital. How is she?”
“She’s doing well,” he replied, his tired face softening with relief. “She is recovering nicely. The doctor says she can be discharged after a few more days of observation.”
“That’s great. I wish her a speedy recovery,” Rebecca said sincerely.
That was a normal pleasantry. Even a stranger on the street would say that to a patient. But Vance seemed genuinely happy to hear it. “Thank you.”
She blinked, not understanding his gratitude. She hadn’t done anything concrete.
“I’m off to dance. You should… head to class.” She looked at his soaked hair and uniform, swallowing the urge to tell him to change.
Some habits from taking care of him for five years were simply ingrained too deeply.
“Yeah.” He hurried to the classroom.
Rebecca didn’t know why the surgery had happened earlier this time, but it aligned perfectly with her goals. She wondered if this was a dream after all. Only in a dream could all the imperfections of reality be fixed so neatly.
Vance had no spare clothes, so he borrowed a basketball jersey from Jethro and changed in the
