125 The Sudden Darkness
In that very instant, a small crack appeared in the icy fortress around his heart. Her deliberately cold tone caught his attention, pulling him out of his frozen state. Without hesitation, he commanded, “Bring it back.”
Tatiana stood still, stunned. “What did you say?”
“Bring it back to me yourself. Right now. I want it.”
She felt trapped. She had just returned, only to be sent back again. It was clear he was making things difficult on purpose. Yet, she couldn’t refuse—after all, he had helped her before, and the jacket truly belonged to him. With a reluctant sigh, she replied, “Fine. Please wait here; I’ll head back immediately.”
“Don’t move. Felix will come to pick you up.”
Felix, who was already halfway to his destination, received the sudden order to turn around and fetch her. He exhaled deeply, muttering under his breath, “Think about the paycheck, think about the paycheck…” as he reluctantly obeyed.
As the car made its way back, it stopped at a red light. Felix glanced casually out the window and spotted a familiar figure emerging from the hospital entrance. Though she was bundled up completely, he recognized her instantly: Bianca, the current Mrs. Jackson. Why was she at a private hospital, one not affiliated with the Jackson family? Before he could ponder further, the light turned green, and the honking behind him urged him forward.
Meanwhile, Bianca hadn’t expected anyone to see her. Anxiety gnawed at her as the doctor’s words echoed in her mind: she was showing signs of a threatened miscarriage and needed strict bed rest. Damn it! She hadn’t even been intimate with Jasper yet. If she lost the baby, there was no way she could keep it a secret! Overwhelmed with panic, she finally called Baron, desperation evident in her voice.
“You have to help me again!”
“I already gave you the medicine,” Baron replied coolly.
Her voice sharpened. “What kind of terrible medicine was that? It had no effect at all! He even pushed me away!”
Baron’s laughter came through the line, mocking and cold. “Then maybe you should look at yourself instead of blaming my medicine.”
Bianca’s face shifted from pale to flushed with anger. The pain in her stomach intensified as she gritted her teeth. “Baron, think fast—if I fail, you won’t gain anything either. Jasper’s been oddly obsessed with that woman lately and has been ignoring me for a long time. You don’t want him to suddenly realize he’s in love with Tatiana, do you?”
Silence fell on the other end. After a long pause, Baron finally spoke slowly, “Wait for my instructions.”
Tatiana returned to the Funland Club, this time wearing a mask Felix had handed her. With it on, she wasn’t prey but a hunter tonight. Only then did she truly grasp the meaning of the night’s events. A wave of unease washed over her as she navigated through the bustling crowd until she reached the VIP room, where Jasper waited.
Tatiana’s breath quickened sharply. She hated the dark. Instinctively, she tried to back away, but stumbled, crashing into a table and falling.
Strong hands caught her from behind, pulling her into a protective embrace. In the darkness, his crisp, cold scent enveloped her. Jasper’s voice held a teasing edge. “How many times are you going to fall before you’re satisfied?”
Her heart pounded wildly. Fear rooted her to the spot.
“Are you hurt?” Seeing no response, a wave of concern washed over Jasper. “Tatiana?”
Her breath seemed to stop, her body stiff and unresponsive.
Jasper was about to lift her and rush to the hospital when the lights flickered back on. She was panting heavily, her breathing ragged. The mask on her face had slipped, revealing her extremely pale complexion. Fear radiated from her; she had bitten her lower lip so hard it was bleeding. His eyes darkened. He grasped her chin firmly. “Let go.”
She reacted slowly, releasing her lip, sending a sharp pain through her mouth.
