He took over most of the factions, becoming the uncrowned king, but he couldn’t personally kill the true culprits–Astor and Madam White. The two had disappeared.

“Daddy.”

A tender, childish voice sounded.

“Ann.”

“Daddy, did you find Mommy?”

He silently shook his head.

“We will find her.”

He walked over, crouched down, and looked directly into Ann’s eyes. “I believe you.”

Ann sniffled. “Daddy, do you blame me?”

“I’ve never blamed you. I’m the one who failed to protect you.”

Jasper reached out and picked Ann up. “You need to rest.”

Ann shook her head. “I’m not sleepy.”

Whenever she closed her eyes, she would see the image of her mommy being shot. She w up screaming from nightmares again and again, and the dark circles under her eyes grew heavier.

“Rest a while, I’ll stay with you.”

He carried Ann back to her room and covered her with a blanket.

“Leave finding your mommy to me. You just need to rest well.”
