Gritting his teeth against the searing pain, Lucas stripped off his outer jacket and tore it into strips. He bound the wound tightly, managing to stem the flow of blood for the moment.

With the task finished, he leaned back against the cold warehouse wall, his face ashen. He hadn’t expected. John to be this bold–to send an assassin in broad daylight.

A cold hatred began to simmer beneath his skin, the dark emotions drowning out his usual refined

composure.

He pulled out his phone, intending to call an old contact to pick him up. But his thumb hovered over the numbers and eventually pulled back. He let out a low, self–deprecating laugh.

What friends did he actually have?

In Bellwood, everyone knew he was the unacknowledged, low–status son of the Lund family. His old “friends” were nothing more than casual acquaintances. Two years had passed; no one would be willing to risk offending John to help him now.

Lucas, you really are a total failure.

He bowed his head, a sense of deathly stillness settling over his features.

Suddenly, his watch emitted a crisp beep–beep, followed by Hubert’s cheerful voice.

“Here comes the little flying stick!”

Lucas’s face froze. He looked down at the watch, momentarily tempted to hurl it across the room. Ultimately, he pressed the answer button. He made a mental note to set the damn thing to silent mode for the rest of his life.

Tammy’s voice came through the speaker.

“Dr. Lucas, I’ve been thinking. I can’t go back to the harbor. Even if you say you don’t need my protection. it’s my duty, and I must-”

“I take it back,” he interrupted.

“What?”

He took a deep breath. “Tammy, I need your protection.”

At least until he had completely dismantled the Lund family and reclaimed what was his, he needed someone he could trust implicitly by his side. Someone who could actually fight. Tammy was the perfect candidate.

He knew he was being opportunistic, even despicable. But he promised himself he would make it up to her.

Tammy arrived at the warehouse in record time.

“Dr. Lucas! You’re hurt!”

Lucas slowly looked up. Seeing her, a flicker of surprise crossed his face. “How did you find me so fast?”

He answered his own question before she could. “Right. Your nose is like a bloodhound’s.”

Tammy stared silently at the gash on his arm. Her expression shifted, her eyes growing fierce and her pupils constricting like a jaguar stalking its prey.

“Who did this?” she hissed. “Who hurt you? I will tear them apart!”

Lucas watched her. In those dark eyes, there was nothing but genuine, unadulterated concern. There were no complex schemes, no ulterior motives, and no layers of deception like the people in the Lund family.

She was pure. Clean. Like a wild, honest predator.

He suddenly felt a wave of guilt for his earlier treatment of her. “I’m sorry.”

“Dr. Lucas, why are you apologizing?”

“For being so harsh to you earlier.”

Tammy grinned, flashing her bright white teeth, and gave him a shy pat on the back.

Unfortunately, she didn’t know her own strength.

Lucas felt like his spine was about to rattle out of his body. The wound on his arm, which had just stopped bleeding, threatened to tear open again.

“Oh! Sorry! I’ll be careful! Let me carry you back.”

“No!” he winced. “Let’s just go. Slowly.”

He avoided her hand, terrified that a few more “pats” would finish what the assassin started.

The Lund family estate was out of the question for now. Fortunately, he had another private residence. Tammy helped him back, moving through the shadows.

When the assassin finally circled back to the warehouse, he found only a pool of blood and no sign of his target. Left with no choice, he reported his failure.

The mastermind behind the hit was, as Lucas suspected, John.

“You idiot! You couldn’t even handle one man? What use are you to me?!”

“I don’t care what you have to do–find him! If you can’t bring him back alive, kill him on sight!”

John slammed the phone down, his eyes gleaming with a sinister light. “If you want to blame someone, blame yourself for coming back!”

Seven days later.

Tatiana successfully arrived in Bellwood. Lucas and Tammy were waiting at the docks to meet her.
