Jasper was outnumbered. Icarus slammed the stock of his rifle into the back of Jasper’s head, and he hit the dirt hard.

He lay there in the dust, staring toward Tatiana and the kids. His voice was a rasp as he tried to yell one last thing. “Don’t look back. Just run!”

The ground started to shake.

Icarus looked up, his face turning white. A dozen black rhinos were charging right at them. The lead male was huffing, its nostrils wide with rage.

“Shit! It’s a stampede! Get to the trucks!”

Icarus didn’t give a damn about Jasper anymore. He scrambled into his car and hauled ass. These rhinos were living tanks. Bullets wouldn’t do a thing, and they would stomp anyone left behind into a pulp.

Jasper tried to drag himself away, but someone grabbed him.

“Move!”

It was Tatiana. She had come back.

“You…”

Jasper looked at her hand and saw a small alarm. It was the emergency gear their guide gave them for the park. It made a high–pitched sound that sounded like a calf in trouble.

Tatiana gave him a grim smile. “Hubert had it in his pocket. It worked.”

The rhinos didn’t just show up. They were called. Jasper felt a hit of pride for his son even while blood poured down his face and ruined his shirt.

The hit wasn’t fatal, and they made it back to the cave.

The kids jumped on him. Hubert was crying so hard he was gasping for air. Ann bit her lip, her hands shaking as she pressed a cloth to the cut on her dad’s head.

“I am fine. Rhinos don’t mess with you if you stay still,” Jasper lied. He wiped the tears off Hubert’s face. “You guys did great. Stop crying.”

“Is Daddy going to die?” Ann asked, her voice breaking.

“No, baby.” Tatiana ripped a piece of her shirt to wrap the wound. She sounded more solid than

she felt. “Your dad is a cockroach. You can’t kill him.”

Jasper winced when she pulled the cloth tight. He looked at her. “Tatiana, easy.”

She glared at him, her eyes ice cold. “Oh? You were being such a hero out there. I didn’t think you could feel anything.”

She was still furious that he stayed behind. When he turned his back on them to face the trucks, her heart nearly stopped.

“I am sorry. I didn’t mean to do that.”

“You terrified the kids.”

Both of them looked like ghosts. Jasper sat up and pulled them into a hug. “Stop crying. I am not dying. I promised Ann I would teach her archery and I promised Hubert a hot air balloon ride. I am not breaking those promises.”

They finally let it out and cried until they were exhausted. They fell asleep right there.

Tatiana stopped the bleeding, but she couldn’t relax without real meds. She looked like a wreck.

“I’ll be okay,” Jasper said. “Get some rest.”

The cave got freezing as the night went on. Tatiana didn’t care. She pressed up against him and the kids to stay warm. She leaned on his shoulder and watched the moon light up his face.

“Never again,” she whispered.

Jasper grabbed her hand and held it. He pulled it to his mouth and kissed it.

“I am sorry I worried you.”

She didn’t move her hand. She just let him hold it. The adrenaline was still buzzing in her brain. She was scared for the kids, and she was scared he was going to die right in front of her.

She needed to feel something else. Before she could think, she looked up and kissed him.

She bit his lip like a wild animal.

Jasper froze for a second, then he took over. He pulled her in and kissed her back like his life depended on it. They were both still alive, and they needed to prove it.

He held the back of her head and kept going until she was out of breath. When he finally let go, she was gasping.

Jasper looked at her red lips, his eyes dark.
