Chapter 4
The next few days, I avoided every family thing I could.
Mom figured it out. She slipped into my room one night and sat on my bed.
“Honey, I know you’ve had a thing for Grayson since you were kids. But he’s with someone now. You can’t keep waiting.”
She paused. “Mabel has already welcomed Brielle into the family. That whole childhood engagement thing-you know it was never real. Let it
go, honey.”
I nodded. Then asked.
“Mom, what if we moved south? Work just offered me a transfer.”
“It’s warmer. Your knee won’t act up as much in winter. You and Dad are retired anyway. Could be a fresh start.”
Mom saw right through me. “Whatever you need. We’re with you.”
I wrapped my arms around her.
Resting against her shoulder, I thought-
If I left him behind, would things finally get better?
Work picked back up after New Year’s. I buried myself in it.
The transfer came through. I’d be leaving next week.
Mom wanted one last dinner with the Morgan family before we left.
I didn’t want to go. But I couldn’t say no to her.
Dinner started. Grayson wasn’t there yet.
I exhaled.
Mabel mentioned he’d been swamped with engagement shoots. Practically living at Brielle’s now.
She pulled out her phone to show me some photos.
I scrolled through them. They looked so damn happy in every single one.
There was one where they were looking at each other.
I could see it. Clear as day.
He loved her.
Something in me went quiet.
Maybe it started that night after Christmas. When I sat on my bathroom floor crying and deleted every picture of us I’d ever saved.

That’s when I accepted it. He never loved me.
And once I did, I let go.
Eventually, I’d build my own life. Meet someone who actually wanted me.
What’s the point? I’m done wasting time on him.
Once that clicked, I felt lighter. I smiled and handed her phone back.
“They look amazing together. Your grandkids are gonna be gorgeous.”
Mr. Morgan chuckled. “We always thought you’d end up being our daughter-in-law. We even found that letter you wrote Grayson back in high
school…”
I didn’t flinch. Just laughed like it was some old embarrassing story.
Mabel relaxed. “We were worried you might still… anyway. Congrats on the move, sweetheart.”
I lifted my glass.
Then a voice cut in.
“What did you just say?”
