Chapter 5
Grayson stormed over. “You’re moving? Where?”
I kept my face blank. “Yeah. Next week.”
Something in him snapped. He grabbed my arm and yanked me outside.
“So you’re that desperate to run off and play house with him?”
“Why the hell didn’t you tell me?”
I stared at him. He looked completely unhinged.
Almost funny, honestly.
“Why would I?”
He started pacing. “Ava, let’s just stop this.”
“I’m sick of the silent treatment. Usually you’re the one who caves first. But this time I waited. And you never came back. It’s been… eating me
alive.”
He pulled me close. “I can’t take the thought of you with someone else. Just imagining you and him-it’s ripping me apart.”
I blinked.
Was he for real right now?
Did he think I’d stay single while he planned a wedding?
I laughed. Sharp. “Could’ve fooled me.”
He ran his hand through his hair. “Brielle and I-it’s not working.”
“She needs constant attention. Every tiny thing sets her off. If she’s upset, she calls me nonstop until I drop everything. Doesn’t matter what I’m
doing.”
Oh.
So now he realized what he lost.
I used to be the one taking care of everything. Always.
Now he was drowning in someone else’s drama. And all that love he had for her? Getting suffocated.
Karma’s real.
“Isn’t that why you fell for her though? Because she needed you?”
I’d overheard him once with his friends.
“I love girls like Brielle. Delicate. Makes you want to protect them. Ava’s way too independent. Acts like she doesn’t even need a guy.”
Chapter 5
Funny how fast those pros became cons.
He couldn’t answer.
His phone rang. Brielle.
Her voice came through loud even without speaker. “Where are you?! You’ve been gone forever!”
He tried to stay calm. “Just stopped by home.”
She lost it. “Bullshit! You went to see her! You miss her, don’t you?!”
Grayson’s jaw clenched. He hung up.
She called back immediately. Then again. Over and over.
He ignored every call.
He looked at me. Exhausted.
“I’m so fucking tired.”
I just looked back at him.
Didn’t feel good. Just sad.
It was freezing. I turned to go back inside.
At that moment, my phone rang. Unknown number.
I answered.
Brielle screamed into my ear. “You’re with him right now! What are you doing?! I know about you two!”
“What did you do to him that’s got him so obsessed?!”
Her voice cracked. “Please. We’re getting married. Just leave him alone…”
She kept going. I hung up.
I barely got inside before someone started pounding on the Morgans’ door across the hall.
“Where is he?! Where’s Grayson?!”
“I don’t know-he was here earlier…”
Then the pounding moved to ours,
“Slut! Open this door!”
Mom opened it, startled.
Brielle shoved past her and burst inside, scanning until she spotted me.
Mom’s voice went hard. “You can’t just barge in here throwing insults!”

Brielle sneered. “Insults? She’s the trashy one. A worn-out piece of-”
Dad stepped forward, furious. “Get out of my house!”
My stomach dropped.
