Chapter 104

Third Person’s PQV

Mortimer’s brow hit a hard knot as his thumb rhythmically swiped across his phone. He was looking at something-or maybe he was waiting for something.

Deep in his consciousness, Barton was letting out alow, expectant howl.

Vivian couldn’t take the silence anymore.

She shot a look at Lillian-a signal.

The tears were still there, but they were now sharpened with a new, desperate edge.

Lillian caught the cue. She wiped her eyes, her voice cracking with a practiced sob. “Mortimer, look at her. The internet is full of monsters accusing her of attacking Seraphina on purpose. Vivian is devastated. She was adamant about apologizing to Seraphina in person. We couldn’t even stop her.”

She reached out, stroking Vivian’s hair like she was calming a wounded pup.

“Vivian has been fragile since she was a cub. You know that. We’ve tried every treatment for her wolf-soul fracture. Now, with all this stress… I’m terrified.” Her voice trailed off into a choked, stifled whimper. 1

Vivian looked up at Mortimer, tears clinging to her long lashes, her voice a soft, broken whisper. “Morty, I never meant for this to happen. My healer told me to share my life online–he said the positive energy from followers helps stabilize the soul. That’s the only reason I posted those photos.”

She dropped her gaze, hiding the calculation in her eyes.

“I only included you because the time we spend together is when I’m happiest. I didn’t think people would jump to conclusions. I never wanted them to hunt Seraphina.”

She was playing the humble card.

She could feel the tectonic shift in the room.

When Mortimer used to look at her, it was with a blind, unearned indulgence. Now? That heat was gone. His golden eyes were cold, clinical, and observant-the look of an Alpha evaluating a threat.

She realized she’d overplayed her hand.

She thought Seraphina didn’t matter. She thought her petty psychological warfare was invisible.

She was wrong. She could feel her status slipping through her fingers like sand.

“Morty, I’m so sorry.” She bit her lip, the picture of tragic regret.

Mortimer didn’t move.

The toxic comments he’d read on the plane were looping in his head.

Every insult hurled at his Luna was a direct strike against his own pride, his own territory.

And Vivian’s silence while the world burned Seraphina at the stake was deafening.

He wasn’t stupid; he’d just been blinded by a sense of “debt” for years.

But now, looking at Vivian’s red-rimmed eyes, all he could see was another face-the one that had handed him her goggles in an Alaskan blizzard while she was freezing to death.

“Rolf’s situation,” he said. His voice wasn’t loud, but the Alpha aura behind it made the air in the room freeze solid.

“Did you have a hand in it?”

The color drained from Vivian’s face.

Lillian froze. Connor stood by the door, his lips trembling but no words coming out.

“Morty!” Vivian’s voice spiked, turning into a shrill, jagged shriek. “How can you even ask me that? He’s my brother! Why would I hurt my own blood?!”/

“Mortimer,” Lillian added, her brow furrowing with a flask of manufactured outrage. “Even if you want to protect your mate, you can’t go throwing dirt on Vivian like this.”

Mortimer ignored them.

His gaze swept past the women and locked onto Connor.

“Connor.” His tone was flat, devoid of any inflection. “The Blade Pack has given the Davis family everything. We’ve shielded you because Vivian saved my life once. But let’s get something straight today.”

He paused, his Alpha aura expanding through the room like a physical force.

“Seraphina is my mate. My other half. To move against her is to move against me.”

He turned back to Vivian.

She was paralyzed, her “victim” expression frozen on a face that was now a ghostly white.

“I’m going to find the truth behind the dosage error,” Mortimer said, each word hitting like a hammer. “Vivian, I’m giving you one chance to be honest with me.”

Vivian’s terror was real now.
