Third Person’s POV
Vivian gripped his coat until her knuckles turned a bloodless white. She looked up through a mask of tears, clutching at him like a drowning woman. “Morty… are you really just going to leave me?”
Mortimer looked down at her hand.
In that second, the mating bond backfired. A memory hit him with the force of a physical blow: another hand.
On the Alaskan ice, Seraphina had handed him her goggles. Her fingertips were a raw, frozen red, yet she hadn’t made a single sound. She’d given him everything she had, and he had taken it and walked away without looking back once.
Now, under the sterile, fluorescent lights of the Shadowfang Healing Center, he looked at Vivian’s calculated expression. Something snapped.
He reached down and uncurled her fingers from his coat, one by one. His touch was clinical. Cold. Final.
Then he walked out the door without a backward glance.
Vivian collapsed back into the chair, her hands still frozen in that reaching gesture.
It hit her then: Mortimer was actually gone.
It wasn’t like the old days where her crying would make him cave.
This time, there was no hesitation in his stride.
A slow chill crawled up her spine.
She’d spent years weaponizing his indulgence.
She’d assumed he’d always be the safety net, no matter how far she pushed the boundaries.
She’d lied about a kidnapping in Alaska to pull him away from his mate; she’d posted the photos; she’d let the internet lynch Seraphina.
He’d never stopped her before.
But she’d finally hit the tripwire she didn’t know existed: Seraphina hersel
Vivian’s nails dug into the leather armrest.
When did she become a restricted zone?
She thought of Mortimer’s face when he asked about Rolf.
There was no pity in his golden eyes-just the absolute, terrifying silence of a judge.
