Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 12

Chapter 12

Seraphina’s POV

“Luna, how was the cake? I had the baker make it specially for you.”

“Morty is just too much sometimes. If I hadn’t told him how guilty I felt, he absolutely refused to take that cake home to you.”

“Please don’t be mad at him. We grew up together, so he’s just used to putting me first. That’s why he left you alone in Alaska. He really didn’t mean it.

“If you have to blame someone, blame me. I don’t want you two to ruin your relationship over me.”

The glow from the phone screen illuminated my face, trembling slightly with my breaths.

On the surface, Vivian was apologizing, but how could I miss the blatant provocation dripping from every word?

I could choose not to fall for her trap, but the thing was… she was right.

It was meant to stir the pot, but it was also the truth.

Suddenly, everything clicked. I finally figured out why the usually high-and-mighty Mortimer had acted so out of character and apologized to me tonight.

It wasn’t out of guilt. It was because Vivian’s “guilt” needed to be soothed. He didn’t bring the cake back to make it up to me; he did it so his sweetheart could get a good night’s sleep.

So, even when dealing with a she-wolf he disliked, he was perfectly willing to swallow his pride-as long as it was for Vivian.

Honestly, I had been deliberately ignoring this reality.

You could tell just by looking at the completely different ways he addressed us. The place Vivian held in his heart was worlds apart from mine.

One was “V,” and the other was “Seraphina.”

Thinking about this, I couldn’t help but let out a bitter laugh.

An intense, stinging ache quickly spread behind my eyes, blurring my vision into a sea of light spots.

I could feel Lily, my wolf, curled up in a corner of my mind, letting out a silent whimper.

“Serves you right… Seraphina, you totally deserve this,” I whispered to the empty room, my voice shaking uncontrollably.

I gripped my phone, unconsciously squeezing it tighter.

Tears dripped onto the screen, splashing into tiny, insignificant droplets.

It took me a while to calm down before I finally texted her back.

“We’re fine, don’t worry about it. Your health is the most important thing.”

After I sent that, Vivian didn’t reply.

I didn’t know if she actually bought it, or if she just got bored because her little provocation failed to get a dramatic reaction out of me.

My mind drifted back to the cake from tonight.

Mortimer had said he didn’t know…

But right after we first mated, he drove past a new bakery after work and bought me a dessert with silvergrass on a whim.

I was so happy back then. Even though I tried to play it cool, a smile had completely taken over my face.

The moment I took a bite, I realized it had silvergrass in it.

But I still finished the whole thing.

What happened next was completely out of my control. My face and hands broke out in severe hives, I started hyperventilating, and the next second, I passed out in his arms.

So, I wasn’t sure if his “I didn’t know” tonight meant he didn’t know the cake had silvergrass in it, or something else…

At the end of the day, it just meant he never paid attention to my life and never really cared.

Just like our maitng. On the outside, it looked glamorous and perfect, but inside, it was a rotting mess.

Dangerous, and lethal.

I slowly lay back down, feeling the mating bond inside me grow increasingly dead and quiet

No resonance, no response. Only a death-like emptiness remained.

In a daze, I drifted off without even realizing it.

I don’t know how much time passed, but as my consciousness blurred, I plunged into a deep, heavy nightmare.

It was that freezing, snowy wasteland in Alaska again. The cold felt like countless icy hands

grabbing my ankles, dragging me down into the abyss.

The despair was so thick I could choke on it. I could feel my body losing heat, slowly fading

away.

Darkness. Endless darkness.

“Help… Mortimer, save me… please…”

I screamed for my life in the dream, but my throat felt like it was filled with lead.

The despair wasn’t just about the danger; it was knowing that no matter how loud I screamed, he wouldn’t look back.

“Seraphina? Seraphina, what’s wrong?”

Through the haze, a voice seemed to pierce the thick snow and ice, ringing anxiously in my
