Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 11

Chapter 11

Seraphina’s POV

Honestly, I didn’t really want to hear his explanation. But out of politeness, I stayed where I was, watching him and waiting for him to finish.

Mortimer’s gaze shifted away for a second, betraying an undeniable flash of guilt.

He cleared his throat. “Tonight at the club, the guys suggested a game. We all put our phones on the table and waited to see whose mate would call first to tell them to come home.”

I blinked, a little taken aback.

“They all said I was a shoo-in to win,” he continued. “Every time we’ve gone out before, I was always the first one to get a call from my mate. But tonight… I waited until the very end, and my phone never rang.”

When he first started speaking, his tone was casual-normal even.

But by the end, I caught a rare hint of grievance in his voice, like he was actually accusing me of wronging him.

I paused for a split second, then pressed my dry lips together. “I’m sorry you lost your game,” I said.

Mortimer froze. He stared at me, a flash of shock and disappointment crossing his eyes.

To him, my attitude probably seemed way too dismissive-like I couldn’t care less whether he accepted the apology or not.

Mortimer’s eyes darkened.

His Alpha aura flared up slightly, agitated by his shifting emotions, but he quickly forced it back down.

Seeing that he had nothing else to say, I really didn’t have the energy to press the issue.

After all, he was a man used to being in absolute control. He was probably just annoyed because I made him lose face tonight.

“If there’s nothing else, I’m going to bed. I have to be up early for my shift at the healing

center tomorrow.”

I made my excuse to leave, but before I could take a single step, he stopped me again.

“Seraphina.”

I paused and looked back at him. “Yes?”

Mortimer didn’t answer right away.

Those normally cold, arrogant eyes were locked onto me without blinking.

When he finally spoke, his voice was slightly hoarse. “Let’s talk.”

Talk?

That finally stirred a ripple of confusion in my otherwise numb heart. “Alright. About what?”

Mortimer led me to the sofa and we sat down.

He sat across from me, leaning forward with his elbows on his knees and his fingers interlaced. He kept his head slightly bowed-a picture of deep conflict, looking like he wanted to say something but couldn’t get the words out.

I didn’t rush him. I just sat quietly, waiting for him to speak.

The living room fell dead silent, the only sound our steady breathing.

After a long time, his deep voice finally broke the silence. “I promised to take to see the Northern Lights… and then I left you there all alone. I’m sorry.” 2

His apology genuinely caught me off guard.

I never expected that a top-tier Alpha like him a man so used to looking down on everyone and holding absolute control over the Blade Pack-would actually swallow his pride and apologize to his mate.

I guess even he realized he’d crossed a line that day.

I gave a self-deprecating smile in my head.

If this were the old me, I probably would have been flattered. I would have forgiven his cold- hearted abandonment in a heartbeat.

But now? I realized I didn’t need to care about his attitude anymore.

From the very first day we mated three years ago, Mortimer made it clear he never wanted the mating. We were nothing more than a contract mating.

He wasn’t in this for love-I knew that better than anyone.

I was the one who willingly signed that three-year contract.

So, even if he chose Vivian over me time and time again, what right did I have to feel wronged?

I had willingly walked into a rigged game. Now that the results were in, I just had to take my loss like an adult.

With that thought, I let out a quiet breath and nodded at him. “It’s fine. I understand.”

“So… you really don’t mind at all?” Mortimer suddenly pressed, his voice urgent.

His eyes were practically boring into mine.

I met his gaze and asked calmly, “Mind what exactly?”.

“I…” The question completely choked him up.

“Are you really not mad?” he asked, trying to confirm it one more time.
