Stepping out of the restaurant, Edwin looked like he’d just won a marathon. “Sera, you owe me a rematch soon. That friend I met in New Zealand? A Grandmaster. Next time, don’t you dare go easy on me just to save my ego.”

Seraphina blinked, then a soft smile touched her ps. “So you noticed?”

The old man barked out a laugh. “You left me so many openings a blind wolf could see them. Of course I noticed.”

Mortimer, who had been treated like background noise for the last hour, finally snapped. The feeling of being an outsider in his own family was clawing at his throat. “When did you start playing chess with my grandfather?” he cut in, looking at Seraphina.

He knew Edwin was a sore loser who dragged out every game for hours. He thought this was a safe bridge to build-a

conversation starter.

He was wrong. Edwin didn’t even look at him; he just let out a sharp, disgusted huff.

“You spent all your time babysitting that Davis girl,” Edwin snapped, the Alpha aura leaking out of him in cold waves.

“Did you ever once care about what your mate was doing? While she was keeping a lonely old man company because his own grandson was too busy cleaning up Vivian’s pathetic messes, you were nowhere to be found! And now you have the nerve to ask?

Mortimer went stiff. The public dressing-down hit him like a physical punch.

But hearing his grandfather drag Vivian’s name into it again, especially in front of Seraphina, made a vein in his temple throb.

“Grandfather, I’ve told you a thousand times. What I have with Vivian is just—”

“Is just a goddamn excuse!” Edwin cut him off. “Fine. Keep your precious ‘responsibility.’ But mark my words: the day Sera gets tired of your shit and tears up that contract, I’m giving her a settlement big enough to buy half the territory. Then I’ll find her an Alpha ten times the man you are.”

“Grandfather!” Mortimer’s face went white. Inside his mind, Barton-his wolf-let out a violent, possessive snarl at the thought of Seraphina being handed to someone else.

Just then, a sleek black sedan pulled up. Justin, Edwin’s former beta, stepped out. “Alpha Edwin.”

“Justin’s here,” Edwin said, ignoring Mortimer’s livid expression.

He turned to Seraphina with a warm smile. “Don’t worry about me, Sera. Make Mortimer drive you back to the clinic. And come see me this weekend, okay?”

“I will, Grandfather. Get home safe.”

Once the car pulled away, Seraphina turned to the street. “The subway station is right there. It goes straight to the clinic. No need to waste your time driving me.”
