Chapter 174

Third Person’s PQV

Seraphina didn’t miss a beat. “Atleast you’re finally self-aware,” she said, giving his bruised ego one last shove.

She turned and walked away, leaving him standing there.

Mortimer didn’t try to grab her this time, but he followed.

He was six-foot-three, radiating power and high-end tailoring, yet he was trailing behind her like a stray that had just been kicked. It was enough of a spectacle to make people on the street stop and stare.

Seraphina noticed a group of girls nearby whispering and snapping photos, their eyes wide with predatory interest at the sight of him. She stopped and pivoted, losing her patience.

“What do you want, Mortimer?”

Mortimer’s eyes were dark, a pathetic edge of vulnerability creeping into his voice. “Get in the car. We need to talk. For real.”

Before she could shut him down, he added, “You want out of the contract? Fine. Let’s talk. Maybe I’m willing to sign after all.”

“You’re serious?” Seraphina’s eyes were full of pure, unadulterated suspicion.

Mortimer felt the sting.

He swallowed his irritation and gave a slow, heavy nod. “Yeah.”

Seraphina thought about it for three seconds. “Fine.”

As they walked toward the car, Mortimer felt a bitter irony.

He never thought he’d reach a point where he had to offer her a divorce just to get her to speak to him.

He let out a silent, self-loathing laugh.

The second the doors shut, Seraphina went straight for the throat. “Alright. What’s the deal?”

Mortimer winced. “You’re in that much of a hurry?”

Seraphina didn’t say a word. She just put her hand on the door handle. “If you’re going to stall, I’m leaving. I have a shift starting. I don’t have time for games.”

She started to pull the latch, but Mortimer lunged across the console and grabbed her wrist.

“Talk! We’re talking! Now!”

Seraphina pulled her hand back, settling into the leather seat. “Go ahead. Make your case. But let’s get one thing straight-if this is about making me drop the demand for Vivian’s apology, forget it. I’d rather stay married and let the internet eat her alive.

She saw his face darken and assumed she’d hit the target. “Don’t blame me, Alpha. As long as we’re mated, she’s a home- wrecker. If you want to watch her drown in the comments, keep stalling. I’m fine either way. Just don’t come crying to me when her wolf-soul fracture hits a new low because she can’t handle the heat.”

“Enough!” Mortimer snapped, his voice a low, vibrating growl.

He looked at her with a mix of fury and exhaustion. “Why do you keep dragging Vivian into our business?”

Seraphina blinked. “You mean this isn’t about using her as a bargaining chip?”

“Seraphina!” Mortimer felt his grip on reality slipping.

Since when was she this much of a headache? She was more lethal than any board member he’d ever faced.

Deep in his mind, Barton was pacing, his pheromones spiking with a jagged, restless anger.

“I never said I wanted to talk about her! Can you stop making her the center of every conversation we have?” He was white- knuckling the steering wheel so hard the leather groaned.

Seraphina saw the red in the corners of his eyes and realized she’d misread the room. She shut up.

“Right. My mistake,” she muttered. “I guess you’re finally worried about the Craig Group’s stock price. Good to know the CEO is back in the building.”

If her reputation was damaged, the reputation of the Craig Group would also suffer.

Between the Craig Group and Vivian, Mortimer would still choose the former.

After all, he was a businessman; childhood friendship could never compare to the interests of the group.

Mortimer understood the meaning behind her unspoken words-Ouch. Mortimer felt that one in his chest.

Just then, her phone went off.

A rapid-fire burst of notifications that made Mortimer’s eye twitch.

“Must be that ‘Dash’ loser,” he thought. The sound was like nails on a chalkboard.

Seraphina checked the screen. It was Caldwell.

Since that day, she had barely been in contact with him.

“How are you holding up?”

“Feeling better?”

“Are you taking your meds?”
