Chapter 140
Third Person’s POV

Inside his mind, his wolf, Barton, was roaring in a blind panic, shaking from the terrifying aftershock of what had just happened.
Just the mental image of Seraphina trying to jump out of a moving car made Mortimer’s heart spasni with fear.
Seraphina, on the other hand, knew exactly what she was doing.
Having survived death once already, she valued her life more than anyone.
She had simply gambled on the fact that Mortimer wouldn’t want a body on his hands and would definitely stomp on the brakes.
But she didn’t waste a single word explaining herself to this arrogant man.
“I need to go back and find Dash,” Seraphina said, staring at him with cold, dead eyes. “Let go of me.”
Looking at her red-rimmed eyes and the icy, detached look she gave him-as if he were a complete stranger-the fury that had been boiling inside Mortimer instantly vanished. It was washed away by a wave of cold, suffocating bitterness and pain.
He held onto her wrist tightly, his eyes bloodshot with pure desperation.
“Seraphina… you can’t do this to me,” he mumbled, his deep voice cracking with a pathetic, shaky vulnerability. 1
Unfortunately, Seraphina didn’t care about his feelings at all. 1
Her entire mind was consumed by Dash.
She was holding her phone with one hand, frantically refreshing the local L.A. pet rescue forums and stray dog network groups, her fingertips trembling with urgency.
Nothing.
Still nothing.
Her anxiety reached a boiling point. Paired with her absolute disgust at Mortimer’s relentless nagging, a flash of pure malice crossed her eyes.
She raised her right foot and slammed the sharp heel of her shoe directly into Mortimer’s knee. 1
She put one hundred percent of her weight and strength into that kick.
“Ngh…!” A blinding, bone-crushing pain shot up his leg. Even for a top-tier Alpha with elite healing abilities like Mortimer, the sudden agony made him gasp for air, and his grip on her wrist instantly loosened.
Seraphina didn’t even look back to see if he was bleeding.
She turned around, raised her hand, and flagged down a passing taxi.
She pulled the door open and climbed right in.
“Seraphina!!” Mortimer lunged forward through the pain, but his hands closed on empty air, catching only a faint, lingering trace of her cedar scent.
“Bang!”
The cab door shut hard.
The driver hit the gas, leaving a cloud of exhaust behind as the taxi completely vanished into the flashing neon lights of the L.A. streets.

Mortimer was left standing alone on the sidewalk.
He stood there, looking completely dazed and a little ridiculous as he stared down at his empty hands. 1
He froze for a solid ten seconds, staring into the dark until the tail lights of the taxi were long gone.
His chest felt like a wolf’s claws had ripped it wide open, leaving a bloody, aching hole that made him hunch over in pain.
The throbbing agony in his lower leg was completely drowned out by the crushing despair in his heart.
Luxury cars rolled past him like a steady river on the late-night streets of Los Angeles.
Yet Mortimer Craig-the billionaire CEO, the supreme leader of the Blade Pack-was standing there like a stray dog abandoned in a thunderstorm.
He was frozen in the cold wind, completely still.
After a long time, his lips curved into a bitter, self-destructive smile. “Seraphina… you’re really something.”
Maybe the West Coast wind was just too harsh tonight, but the corners of his eyes were a dark, burning red.
“Holy shit! Mortimer?!” An loud, exaggerated shout came from a grey Rolls-Royce Wraith parked just a few yards away from his McLaren.
Humphrey rubbed his eyes, staring at the man standing like a statue under the streetlamp. “What the hell is he doing standing in the freezing cold like a tragedy actor instead of going back to the manor?”
In the passenger seat, Alina-looking perfectly styled with a fresh manicure-followed his gaze.
It actually was the great Alpha, Mortimer Craig.
“Babe, wait for me. I’m going to go see what’s wrong with him.” Humphrey’s gossip radar instantly turned on.
“Look at him. He looks exactly like a stray dog that just got kicked out the front door.”
The Rolls-Royce slowly pulled over to the curb.
Humphrey threw his door open and jogged over to Mortimer.
“Hey! What are you doing out here in the middle of the night? Working on the streetlights?”
momen
Mortimer slowly raised his head, forcing the blank look out of his eyes the moment he recognized his friend.
“What are you doing here?” his voice sounded completely shot.
“Just driving my girlfriend home, and I happened to spot you.” Humphrey looked like he’d just struck gold, his eyes lighting up with amusement. “Did you… get into a fight and get your ass kicked or something?”
“I’m fine. Go take your girlfriend home,” Mortimer said, turning his head away and shutting down the conversation with a cold voice.
But Humphrey wasn’t about to leave.
When had the Alpha of the Blade Pack ever looked this pathetic? If he walked away now, he’d regret missing the tea for a whole year.
