Trista threw the cruel, freezing words at him with a glare of pure disgust.
That sentence was the final straw that broke his back.
Once the mating bond was officially dissolved, he would truly, permanently lose any connection to Seraphina.
Standing nearby, Wilmot was frozen in shock
Watching his wife relentlessly tear into his best friend, the Alpha didn’t dare take a single step forward to intervene.
So Seraphina actually almost died.
He looked at Mortimer with deep pity. Right now, the imposing CEO looked so utterly destroyed that Wilmot could barely bear to
look at him.
“Stop talking. Mortimer’s wolf is going insane,” Wilmot awkwardly leaned close to Trista, cautioning her in a hushed whisper, terrified of the ticking time bomb beside them.
“Insane? It’d be better if he went insane and dropped dead,” Trista replied coldly, not moving an inch.
She had to stand guard for Sera. 1
Not long after, the core members of the Blade Pack who caught wind of the emergency began arriving at the hospital one by one. Even Edwin strode down the hall, his aged face dark as a thundercloud.
The moment they laid eyes on Mortimer, they were all genuinely shocked.
The untouchable Alpha was hunched over, his posture completely defeated. Blood stained his split lip, and the rims of his eyes were so violently red they looked ready to weep actual blood. He looked so entirely shattered that a simple touch might cause him to crumble into dust.
“How is Sera?” Edwin stepped forward, his expression grave.
Faced with the respected elder, Trista’s hostile attitude softened significantly. “Edwin.”
“Good girl. What is Sera’s condition right now?” Edwin asked gently.
Trista shot Mortimer a vicious glare. “Ask him.”
Mortimer kept his head hung low, looking exactly like a hollow shell that had lost its soul.
Edwin stared at his grandson-a man currently reaping every single bitter sèed he had sown-and let out a long, heavy sigh. “I told you a long time ago. One day, you would regret this.”
When Seraphina groggily regained consciousness, the familiar, sterile scent of the healing center drifted into her nose.
Her brain was still heavy with sedatives. She struggled to peel her eyelids open, subconsciously scanning her surroundings. The very first thing she saw was Edwin’s caring, lined face looking down at her.
“Grandpa?” she rasped softly, her voice dry.
Hearing her move, Edwin quickly stood up and leaned over the bed. “You’re awake? How do you feel?”
Seraphina’s mind hadn’t fully booted up yet. “Grandpa, why am I here?”
“This is the Iceblade Healing Center. You passed out at the ski resort. Mortimer rushed you here.”
Seraphina’s memories gradually cleared. She braced her arms against the mattress and slowly propped herself up into a sitting position.
“I chased Mortimer away,” Edwin stated simply.

Then, the old Alpha let out a long, deeply sorrowful sigh. “Sera… Trista told me everything about what happened to you in Alaska. As an elder of the Blade pack… it is us who have failed you.”
As he spoke, Edwin’s weathered face was etched with absolute, undeniable guilt.

Chapter 176
Third Person’s POV
“Grandpa, please don’t say that. This has nothing to do with you,” Seraphina replied quickly.
“Mortimer has been the destined Alpha since he was a child. He never gave us a single moment of worry,” Edwin said, his voice heavy with regret. “We never imagined that when it came to Vivian, he would completely lose his sense of proportion and make you suffer so much.”
Seraphina shook her head repeatedly. “Grandpa, it really doesn’t matter. Please don’t feel sorry. Actually…”
She hesitated for a moment before finally deciding to confess, “Actually, Mortimer and I are only mates in name.”
She needed to tell Edwin the truth. i
She knew the old Alpha treated her incredibly well, shielding her with the unconditional tolerance of a true elder.
Since she had already made up her mind to sever the mate contract with Mortimer, she needed to let the old man mentally prepare himself. 1
“Mates in name?” Edwin looked absolutely stunned. “What does that mean? You two were witnessed by the Moon Goddess…”
Seraphina pressed her pale lips together and explained the mandatory business contract she and Mortimer had signed prior to their mating.
“Absurd!” Edwin was so furious his hands began to shake. A terrifying trace of the elder werewolf’s aura subconsciously leaked into the room. “What the hell is going through that boy’s head? To actually dare use a piece of paper to desecrate a sacred mate vow?”
Seraphina quickly reached out to soothe him. “Grandpa, I signed that contract voluntarily. At the time, my grandfather was gravely ill and desperately wanted to see me find a home before he passed. Mortimer was a perfect fit in every aspect, and my grandfather was very satisfied with him. We were… just helping each other out, so to speak.”
Edwin’s frown deepened as he listened, his aged eyes filling with a complex mix of emotions and deep heartache for her. Finally, he let out another long, heavy sigh.
“Sera… did you really agree to sign that fake contract just because your grandfather was ill?”
Seraphina’s expression froze. She looked at Edwin in shock, the polite smile on her lips turning stiff. “Grandpa…”
“Huh.” The old man gently patted the back of her hand, his tone carrying the absolute clarity of someone who had lived through a lifetime of love and loss. “I may be old, but I’m not senile yet. I had my own Luna once; how could I not see it? You’ve been in love with Mortimer for a long time, haven’t you?”
The smile on Seraphina’s face completely vanished. She couldn’t pretend anymore.
“Silly child, you can’t hide it when you truly love someone. Even without establishing a true scent mark, every single time you looked at Mortimer, your emotions were practically overflowing. It’s only that blind fool of a grandson who couldn’t see a damn thing.”
Seraphina remained completely silent, but her eyes suddenly grew burning hot.
The suffocating bitterness and humiliation of silently chasing after a top-tier Alpha… she thought she was the only one who knew.
But in this moment, someone had gently ripped away her flawless disguise, telling her that her silent sorrow had actually been seen all along.
She had always prided herself on being calm and rational, but right now, the sour ache in her heart surged up like a violent tidal
wave.

“Why didn’t he know to cherish you properly… Now it’s too late for him to regret, isn’t it?” Edwin looked at Seraphina, a hint of cautious probing in his tone. 1
Even though he was furious at his disappointing grandson, he was genuinely satisfied with his Luna.
If this bond truly broke, he would feel a profound, lifelong regret for his grandson.
Seraphina naturally caught the old man’s subtle probing. She pulled a self-deprecating smile. “Grandpa, that contract is about to expire.”
The implication was absolute: their mate relationship, which existed only in name, was about to end forever.
