Chapter 178
Third Person’s POV
“That avalanche was just a freak accident. It was my own bad luck to run into it. You don’t need to take the blame for it.”
At this point, the look in her eyes grew even firmer.
“Mortimer, we are only mates in name.”
Hearing Seraphina emphasize the boundaries of their relationship yet again, the sheer panic and helplessness in Mortimer’s heart only intensified.
He looked at her, his eyes entirely bloodshot, his lips trembling slightly. “We don’t have to be just mates in name.”
“Sera, let’s start over. Okay?” As he spoke, the desperate pleading in his eyes practically spilled over.
The old Seraphina probably wouldn’t have dared to dream that one day, the high-and-mighty Alpha would speak to her with such a lowly, begging tone and gaze.
But the current Seraphina just shook her head. “Let’s just leave it at this.”
“No!”
Mortimer stood up frantically from his chair. He stared down at her, a layer of moisture rising in his red-rimmed eyes. “How can we just leave it at this? We can’t just leave it at this.”
Seeing Mortimer so emotionally agitated, Seraphina felt a wave of exhaustion.
“Don’t do this. It’s inappropriate.”
It was inappropriate for the reality of their relationship, and it was entirely unfitting for his status as an alpha.
Seraphina’s constant, faint, completely unbothered reactions made it increasingly unbearable for Mortimer.
His red eyes stared at her, utterly refusing to give up. “We can start over.”
Seraphina frowned slightly. “Let’s just forget it.”
“Sera.” Mortimer looked desperate-desperate to prove the absolute sincerity of his feelings to her in that exact moment.
Panic hit him like a tidal wave. Mortimer completely lost his composure.
Driven by pure despair, he tried to forcefully stimulate the dormant mating bond within his chest, wanting to use an alpha’s natural, biological influence over his mate to forcefully pour his comfort and love directly into Seraphina’s soul.
However, the exact moment his mental energy brushed against that invisible bloodline connection, a violent, agonizing pain of being ripped apart erupted from the deepest depths of his soul.
That dull, tearing agony instantly spread through his entire body, turning his face deathly pale.
In that moment, Mortimer realized with absolute horror: the already weak, fractured mating bond between them was critically damaged.
It was like a withered, dead branch covered in deep cracks-ready to shatter at the slightest touch. It was completely unable to bear any mental contact whatsoever.
“It’s useless! Don’t waste your energy!”
His massive wolf, Barton, let out an extremely pained, weak low growl in his mind. “Lily has completely closed herself off. She refuses to communicate with me at all! She is telling us to ‘piss off’! Mortimer, your cold-bloodedness killed this bond!”

The absolute rejection from his mate’s inner wolf and the severe spiritual backlash from the broken bond almost made Mortimer’s legs give out.
But Seraphina just looked at him calmly. She raised a hand to interrupt his spiral and continued, “Mortimer, back when you put that contract in front of me and told me we were just getting a mating of convenience… because I loved you, I agreed to that absurd proposal.”
“In the name of loving you, I willingly participated in this gamble. In the end, I lost, and I willingly accept my defeat. I don’t blame you, and I don’t hate you. But equally, I don’t love you anymore. Kreally don’t.”
She watched Mortimer’s eyes grow redder and redder.
She touched her own chest. Although she felt a little bit of pity, she didn’t feel a single trace of heartache.
Because she had completely given up on the contract, her wolf, Lily, had also fallen into a state of profound apathy and weakness.
But Mortimer grew increasingly panicked. The sheer terror in his eyes looked like it was about to overflow.
He frantically grabbed Seraphina’s hand again, his lips trembling violently. “No, you didn’t lose! I do love you! I just… I just realized it too late.”
“Sera, I am in love with you.”
He emphasized his words with bloodshot eyes, his voice breaking. “I know I was horribly wrong before. I deliberately humiliated you. I disappointed you. I convinced myself I didn’t care about you.”
