Chapter 227
Third Person’s POV
She hadn’t blocked him or deleted his contact.
She just quietly shut him out of her life while he clung to the faintest hope that his amends could repair their mating bond. 1
She kept everything perfectly civil, yet that emotionless distance cut him deeper than any anger ever could.
Mortimer looked at Seraphina and let out a sudden laugh.
Yet, with his face etched in sorrow and his eyes glistening with tears, he looked heartbreakingly broken.
But Seraphina didn’t feel a thing; the blizzard that had once turned her heart to stone left behind only a hollow, immovable chill.
She simply looked at him with a blank expression and muttered, “Happy birthday.”
Her voice was flat, devoid of emotion, like an actor reading a script just to get through the scene.
“You promised you’d spend my birthday with me,” Mortimer said, refusing to give up.
Desperate to hold onto their dying bond, he let his own obsession trap and torment him. “You promised me. How could you forget?”
His tear-filled eyes stayed fixed on her as he repeated it again and again. “You promised.” 1
Seraphina’s expression remained blank. She didn’t even bother pretending to feel guilty.
She met his eyes and asked calmly, “I did. So?”
Mortimer opened his mouth, his throat tightening, ready to ask why she’d broken her promise. But Seraphina beat him to it.” Just because I promised, I have to keep it, Mortimer?” she asked coldly.
A mocking smile curved her lips.
“If you can’t even keep your own promises, what makes you think you can demand that I keep mine?”
Mortimer instantly understood what she meant, and his face turned deathly pale.
Only then did he remember that, over the years, he had rarely fulfilled the obligations written in their contract.
He’d always believed that giving her a card with no spending limit and sending gifts on holidays meant he had fulfilled his duties as her mate. He’d never realized that, beyond those material things, he’d given her nothing.
“I’ve honored every obligation in our contract. As for promises outside of it, I’ll keep them if I want to-and if I don’t, I won’t. Alpha Mortimer, don’t expect to force me.”
With that, Seraphina shook off his hand and walked inside.
The door shut firmly in his face. The heavy thud landed on his heart like a crushing blow.
Back inside, Seraphina pushed Mortimer completely out of her mind. She wiped Dash’s paws, gave him his medicine, then headed to the bathroom for a shower. 1
Meanwhile, at the Regent Hotel near Shadowfang Academy. “So, you went to Los Angeles again?” A woman’s voice came through the phone, edged with irritation.
“Yeah,” Caldwell replied, standing on the balcony in a loose black robe. The chill of the Los Angeles winter night kept him wide awake. He lazily swirled the wine in his glass, but beneath the casual motion lay a quiet melancholy.

The woman fell silent for a moment before asking, “When are you coming back?”
Caldwell paused with the glass halfway to his lips. His gaze drifted toward the neighborhood where Seraphina lived. After a long silence, he finally answered, “We’ll’see.”
The woman was quiet again. After a while, she said, “Stay away from the Blade pack.”
“Got it.”
“Get some sleep.”
Before hanging up, she muttered to herself, “Why does he keep disappearing to LA?”
Caldwell heard her and paused for a moment. Then, a slow smile spread across his face-because someone important was here.
He went back inside, scooped up Toasty, who was lying belly-up on the blanket, kissed its head, and fell into deep thought.” Sweetheart, do you want a Luna?” he asked.
Toasty seemed to understand. He kneaded his stomach and let out a happy little meow, as though saying yes.
Meanwhile, after saving and printing the lesson plan, Seraphina shut down her computer and stepped out of the study. Just as she was about to head to bed, her phone rang. It was the professor who lived across the hall.
“Sera, could you check outside your door? A man is sitting there. He’s not some creep, is he? Should I call security to have him removed?”
A creep? Seraphina walked to the door and pulled up the hallway camera. Mortimer? Why was he still here?
“Sera? Should I wake my wife? We can help you get rid of him,” the professor offered.
Not wanting him to worry, Seraphina quickly replied, “No, thank you. I know him. I’ll handle it. Please get some rest.”
“Are you sure you don’t need help?” the professor pressed, clearly still uneasy.
