Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 228

Chapter 228

Third Person’s POV

When Seraphina still got no response, she impatiently reached out and gave him a shove.

His skin was burning hot. She frowned even more.

“A fever?” she asked, clearly annoyed.

Mortimer always managed to create trouble for her.

“Mortimer, you have a fever.” She raised her voice to make sure he heard. 1

His heavy eyelids slowly lifted. The fever had left his eyes rimmed red, and paired with his fragile, aggrieved expression, he looked genuinely pitiful.

“I’ll only say a few things, then I’ll leave.” The irritation on Seraphina’s face became even more obvious.

“About having the video of Dash taken down. I didn’t do it to help Vivian or protect the Davis family. I watched the video, and it broke my heart. The only thing I could think about was how much worse it would be for you if you saw it. I was afraid you’d see it, so I had it removed.”

Mortimer’s voice was rough from the fever and the wolf raging out of control inside him.

He spoke rapidly, desperate to explain, terrified she would walk away before he finished.

When he was done, he looked at her with pleading eyes. “Please believe me, Sera. Just this once.”

Seraphina wore the same expression Wilmot had earlier.

Speechless.

“I know I did something stupid. I wanted to spare you the pain, but I only ended up hurting you even more.” Mortimer lowered his head and apologized again and again, stripped of all the aura he usually carried as an Alpha.

“So… should I thank you for that?”

Seraphina looked at him evenly. “You only thought about how devastated I’d be seeing Dash abused. Did it ever occur to you that knowing the people responsible had powerful connections, and that I couldn’t get justice for him, would hurt even more?”

Mortimer opened his mouth but couldn’t find a single word. 1

She was right. He had no defense. Even he knew what he’d done had been unbelievably foolish.

What had he been thinking back then?

“Sera, I know I was wrong. Please give me a chance to make it right.”

His eyes were filled with humble desperation. “I promise I’ll take care of it.”

ľ

Seraphina was silent for a moment before answering. “That’s not necessary, Alpha Mortimer. I’ll handle it myself. Now leave. You’re disturbing my neighbors.”

With that, she turned and went back inside.

“Sera…”

A loud thud sounded behind her. Seraphina instinctively turned around and saw Mortimer’s tall body collapse to the floor.

She crossed her arms and looked down at him coldly.

Was he pretending to pass out? 2

Just as she was about to ignore him and shut the door, her wolf Lily suddenly let out a restless growl deep within her mind.

A faint sensation traveled through the mate bond.

Lily could clearly sense that Mortimer’s wolf was in terrible shape. The high fever had driven it into a deep, coma-like state.

Lily reminded her. “He’s not faking it. Something is seriously wrong with him.”

Seraphina paused. Her brows knit together again. She hurried over, crouched beside him, and nudged him. “Mortimer.

Mortimer.”

This time, there was no response. One hand was clamped tightly over his stomach. His brow was deeply furrowed, his face twisted with pain, and heat radiated from him in chaotic waves.

Seraphina stood there, staring at him for several long seconds before taking a slow breath.

Finally, she went back inside, grabbed her phone from the entryway, and calmly made a call. “Beta Tade, Mortimer collapsed outside my door. Could you come over?”

By the time Beta Tade arrived at Seraphina’s apartment complex, he was drenched in cold sweat.

The entire drive over, one thought had kept running through his head. If anything happened to Alpha Mortimer, where was he supposed to find another job? Would his million-dollar salary disappear? Would his career be over before it reached its peak? 1

The more he thought about it, the more he sweated. He had already prepared himself for the worst.

When he finally arrived, he found Alpha Mortimer curled up on the floor, looking miserable and pitiful.
