Chapter 248
Third Person’s POV

Seraphina was a bit surprised. This morning, when Vivian had tearfully pleaded over the phone, guilt-tripping him with her “life -saving favor,” Mortimer had told her to come find him at the Craig Group’s headquarters.
So he’d summoned that rogue over just to personally inform her that her entire family was about to be destroyed?
If so, it was undeniably cruel.
But if Mortimer truly intended to use the full force of his authority as Alpha to bankrupt the Davis family and permanently drive Vivian out of the Blade Pack’s territory, it would certainly spare Seraphina a great deal of future trouble.
For a spoiled heiress who had always lived above everyone else, watching her family fall from power, losing the Blade Pack’s protection, no longer being able to splurge on luxuries, and no longer having lower-ranking werewolves fawn over her-that would be more painful than death itself.
To make things worse, the one destroying her family was the very Alpha she’d spent all this time trying to cling to, and the very guy who’d built them up.
The irony wasn’t lost on Seraphina, though she kept her thoughts to herself.
Her silence and her unique cool scent that held not even a hint of emotion directed toward Mortimer made him panic even more.
“From now on, I won’t give a damn about anything involving the Davis family or Vivian ever again. The wealth and protection I’ve given them over the years is more than enough to pay back what happened back then.
“Sera, just give me one chance to fix things. I swear I won’t have any business or personal ties with her.
“As for Lillian abusing Dash…” His voice tightened. “You can deal with her however you see fit. Even if you want her tortured in prison, I won’t interfere.”
At the mention of Lillian, Seraphina’s face darkened again.
In her mind, Lily bared her fangs in anger, letting out a threatening growl.
Given what Lillian had done to Dash, Seraphina had exercised immense self-control by just letting the legal system handle it and sending that snake to a human prison.
The moment she’d learned that Dash had nearly been beaten to death, she’d wanted nothing more than to make Lillian pay with
her own hands.
That morning, when she’d realized Mortimer might compromise again for Vivian’s sake and use his connections to bail Lillian out, her disgust toward him had reached its peak.
For a brief moment, she’d even resolved that if he truly dared free that bitch, she’d fight him at all costs.
Now, with his promise, the fury burning inside her finally eased a bit. Still, she added coldly, “I hope you keep your word. Don’t make me hate you even more.”
After saying that, she checked the time again. “We’re pretty much done here. I assume there’s nothing else to talk about?”
Mortimer parted his dry lips, but no sound came out. Inside him, Barton had fallen into complete, hopeless silence.
In the end, he just shook his head in frustration.
“Then I’ll head back to my office.” Seraphina took a couple of steps before stopping and turning back to look at him. “Three days from now, let’s meet somewhere and officially sign the papers to sever our mating bond.”
The color drained completely from Mortimer’s face. His voice was so hoarse it was barely audible. “Alright.”

When Mortimer didn’t object, a huge weight was finally lifted from Seraphina’s chest.
She’d been worried his possessiveness would flare up and he’d refuse to let her go, which would have just caused her a ton of
extra trouble.
After she left, Mortimer remained sitting there in a daze.
His vacant, desolate gaze rested on her cup of black coffee, which hadn’t been touched once since it was served. Any warmth she had left behind was long gone.
The corners of his lips twitched. In the end, all he managed was a wry smile, making him appear like a man whose very soul had
been hollowed out.
When Seraphina returned to the faculty office, she saw Caldwell sitting at the desk the moment she walked in.
Resting in front of him was an elegant gift box containing the custom fountain pen she’d given him the day before.
The instant he saw her, he let his guard down. His gentle pheromones quietly enveloped her, soothing her exhaustion.
He beckoned her over, and she walked up to him. “What’s wrong? Is the pen not working well?”
