Chapter 258
Third Person’s POV
Thinking about the enormous amount of money, Seraphina said casually, “For that kind of money, I’d say we’re more than even.

Mortimer let out a soft chuckle/”Sera, I’ve realized you’re actually pretty funny sometimes.”
Seraphina rolled her eyes, speechless. She’d just learned to let things go.
Back then, she trapped herself in a cage of her own making, constantly agonizing over why Mortimer didn’t love her. It had done nothing but bleed her dry of all her energy.
Their relationship had begun with a contract she had willingly signed. She couldn’t blame him for that.
Even when she received his message while trapped beneath the avalanche, she ldn’t hate him. She simply stopped loving him -stopped clinging to a mating bond that had only ever bound one of them.
She’d always remembered an old werewolf saying: “If you choose it willingly, you accept whatever comes after.”
The angriest she’d ever been was when she believed Mortimer was shielding Lillian, leaving Dash to suffer a grave injustice.
But that had nothing to do with whether Mortimer loved her or not-if it had been anyone else shielding Lillian, she’d have
been just as furious.
So when Lillian was sentenced to five years, Vivian’s schemes were exposed, and Mortimer never interfered, the resentment she had held onto simply melted away.
Once she stepped outside the narrow cage called love and looked at everything objectively, she saw no reason to remain bitter. After all, ten billion dollars in compensation for three years of her life was an incredibly sweet deal.
The thought made Seraphina feel a little lighter. “Thanks to you, Alpha Mortimer, I made the rich list.”
“Congratulations,” Mortimer replied.
“Thank you.”
The conversation fizzled out, and an awkward silence settled between them.
“I should get to class. See you tomorrow,” Seraphina said.
“Alright, see you tomorrow.” There was a trace of reluctance hidden in Mortimer’s low voice.
Seraphina said nothing more and ended the call.
Mortimer stared at the phone long after the line had gone dead, the smile in his eyes slowly fading.
He knew she was determined to cut all ties, and that accepting such an enormous fortune would weigh on her conscience.
But the moment he half-jokingly, half-seriously threatened to withdraw the application, she immediately agreed to accept the
money.
Mortimer sighed, realizing she wouldn’t give him even the tiniest sliver of hope. 1
The next morning, Seraphina had no classes, so she arranged to meet Mortimer at the title company to complete the property transfer.
Just as she was about to leave, Caldwell called out to her, walking over from the other end of the hallway with a stack of textbooks cradled in his arms.

“You’re heading out?” he asked.
“Yeah, I’m meeting Mortimer to finalize the property transfer.”
Caldwell’s eyes dimmed. For a split second, his breath caught in his throat. “So… you accepted everything?”
Seraphina didn’t mention Mortimer’s threat to withdraw the application. She nodded and joked, “Yeah. It’s too much money to turn down.”
Then she glanced at her watch. “I have to go now.”
“All right. Be careful,” Caldwell said.
He watched Seraphina walk away, his expression gradually darkening.
Just then, his phone rang. He looked down at the screen, and a trace of coldness flashed across his face.
He answered. “Hello?”
Whatever the person on the other end said made him frown impatiently. “Understood,” he snapped. “I’m working at my own pace. You better stay put. If you mess this up for me, don’t blame me for what happens next.”
With that, he hung up.
Putting his phone away, he rested both hands casually on the railing. From there, he could still see Seraphina walking toward the academy gates.
He stood there watching her for a long time before finally looking away and leaving without expression.
What he didn’t notice was that someone else had been watching him.
“Velda, what are you staring at?”
Someone slapped Velda hard on the shoulder, making her jump.
Velda pointed toward Caldwell. “Who’s that?”
“Oh, you mean Professor Craig?”
“Craig?” Velda’s heart skipped a beat.
“Yep. The same as yours,” her friend replied. “He’s a professor our department just recruited from overseas. He teaches neurosurgery. Why? Don’t tell me you’ve got a crush on him.”
Velda rolled her eyes at her friend’s teasing. “You know I only date younger guys.”
“Oh, come on. Professor Craig is way better looking than those boys you like.”
“Hey, don’t you dare insult my boys.”
Velda kept up the banter with her friend, but her mind was occupied by Caldwell’s familiar face.
