Chapter 26

Third Person’s POV

Mortimer left Seraphina’s office, his face like stone.

His head was filled with the image of her cold, detached expression-the way she’d looked at him with nothing but pure annoyance. It felt like a physical weight was crushing his chest.

It was suffocating and oppressive, mixed with a flicker of panic he didn’t even recognize in himself yet.

He’d just stepped out of the building when his phone rang.

He stopped, a part of him thinking it was Seraphina-maybe she’d realized she was wrong and was calling to apologize.

The corners of his mouth twitched upward for a split second, and the pressure in his chest eased.

Then he checked the screen. The faint smile vanished instantly.

His brow furrowed, but he hit the green button anyway. “Hello, Vivian?”

“Morty… I… my brother is in trouble. He was attacked by a rogue… they’re taking him to… to the healing center. Morty, I’m so scared! My parents are out of town, I don’t know what to do…”

Vivian’s voice was a mess of terror, trembling through the speaker.

“A rogue attacked your brother?”

Mortimer’s frown deepened as he headed for the parking lot, his voice shifting into a soothing tone. “Don’t be scared. Do you know which healing center they’re taking him to? I’ll head there now.”

“I think… it’s the Shadowfang Healing Center. Morty, what if he dies?”

Shadowfang?

That was exactly where Seraphina worked.

Mortimer stopped in his tracks. “Stay calm,” he said patiently. “I’m already at Shadowfang. Just get here safely, don’t rush. I’ll handle everything on this end.”

The sobbing on the other end cut off abruptly. “Morty? Why are you there? Did you… did you go to see Seraphina?”

Mortimer couldn’t understand why she was focused on something so irrelevant at a time like this. He didn’t have the patience to explain. “Don’t worry about that right now. I’m going to check on your brother’s condition.”

He hung up before she could say another word.

Just then, an ambulance with its lights screaming tore into the emergency bay.

A blood-soaked patient was rushed off the gurney by the paramedics.

“Patient was attacked by a rogue twenty minutes ago,” the head trauma healer shouted. “Blunt force trauma from the impact, massive chest injury. We have a significant blood pressure differential in the upper limbs-suspected aortic dissection. Get the doctor on call down here, now!”

As they wheeled the gurney toward the trauma bay, Mortimer followed them in.

The man on the bed was indeed Vivian’s brother, Rolf Davis.

“Have we contacted the family?”

“I’m here,” Mortimer said, stepping forward quickly.

“Follow me, please.”

On the other side of the building, Seraphina had just swallowed the medication Tabitha had prescribed when the phone in the on -call room rang.

“Seraphina, we have a rogue attack victim in the ER. Suspected aortic dissection. Get down frere immediately.”

“On my way.”

She didn’t even have time to clear the pills off her desk before she bolted out of the roorn, racing toward the emergency center.

When she arrived at the trauma bay, the first thing she saw was Mortimer. He was standing there in his sharp suit, his brow deeply furrowed, looking uncharacteristically grim.

“Seraphina’s here,” someone called out.

Mortimer looked up, his eyes brightening for a second when he saw it was her.

He took a fast step toward her.

“Do you know the patient?” she asked before he could speak.

If he didn’t, a man who had already left shouldn’t be standing in the middle of the ER.

Mortimer hesitated, then nodded. “It’s Vivian’s brother.”

Seraphina gave a knowing nod. Of course.

She moved to the gurney for a preliminary check. The second her fingertips touched Rolf’s skin, her expression shifted. His wolf -soul was incredibly weak, flickering like a candle in the wind. He was on the verge of a deep, irreversible slumber.

Seraphina locked her focus and went to work.

Mortimer hovered by the bed, his anxiety causing him to leak a heavy, suffocating wave of Alpha pheromones.

In the cramped space of the trauma bay, the air felt like it was turning into lead. The surrounding staff went pale, their breathing becoming shallow and strained under the pressure.

She looked at the healer beside her. “Where are the CT results?”

“Right here.” Another healer handed her the scans.
