Mortimer only caught a glimpse of Seraphina as she swapped into her surgical scrubs. Her face, devoid of any makeup, was set in a professional, expressionless mask. Before he could steal another look, the doors sealed shut.
“Morty!” Vivian’s voice hitched with a sob, and a second later, she threw herself into his arms.
“Morty, I’m so scared. What am I going to do if something happens to Rolf?”
Mortimer’s body went rigid as she clung to him.
The first thing that flashed through his mind wasn’t comfort for Vivian, but Seraphina’s detached face. Almost instinctively, he reached out and pushed Vivian away.
“Don’t worry,” he said, his voice stiff. “Sera is in there saving him. He’ll be fine.”
Sera…
Vivian’s sobbing hit a snag.
This was the first time she’d ever heard Morty use such an intimate nickname for Seraphina.
Her eyes darkened for a fraction of a second, a sudden, sharp sense of crisis clawing at her heart.
“Morty, I’m terrified…” She stayed close to him, looking up with a hesitant, wavering gaze.
Mortimer’s eyes shifted from the OR doors to Vivian. “I told you, he will be fine.”
But Vivian bit her lip, looking like she was harboring a secret she was too afraid to tell.
Mortimer’s brow drew together. “What are you worried about?”
He rubbed his temples, a trace of suppressed impatience bleeding into his tone.
Vivian didn’t notice. Her voice was a low, trembling whisper. “I heard Rolf’s condition is critical. That he could die at any minute. Seraphina is so young… can she… can she really bring him back?”
She gripped the hem of Mortimer’s suit jacket. “Can we… can we call in another healer for him? Please?”
For some reason, hearing Vivian question Seraphina’s competence sparked a sudden, sharp flame of anger in Mortimer’s gut.
“The healers at Shadowfang are the best in the business. Seraphina was Dr. Alphi’s star pupil. Saving your brother is well within her skill set. Stop overthinking it.”
Vivian flinched at the respect and protectiveness in his voice. 1
That small seed of crisis was now growing into a full-blown panic.
She looked at the OR doors, a flash of malice crossing her eyes.
Her knuckles turned white as she clenched her fists. She wasn’t ready to give up. “Even if her skills are fine, I’m just afraid…. afraid she’s still mad about you leaving her in Alaska for two weeks because of me. What if… what if she takes it out on Rolf? What if she deliberately-”
Barton, the wolf inside Mortimer, suddenly bared his teeth. A low, instinctive warning growl rumbled deep in Mortimer’s throat.
“Vivian!” Mortimer’s voice was like ice, cutting her off mid-sentence.

That single, cold snap was backed by a sudden burst of Alpha aura. Itte air in the hallway seemed to freeze. Vivian’s breath hitched, her face turning deathly pale under the crushing pressure.
She looked up, stunned, meeting Mortimer’s lethal gaze.
“She is not that kind of person,” Mortimer said.
His voice was cold-vibrating with a genuine anger that Vivian had never felt directed at her before.
Vivian stared at him in total shock. She couldn’t believe he was defending Seraphina this fiercely-even going so far as to snap
at her.
“Vivian, I’ve been mated to Seraphina for nearly three years,” Mortimer continued. “I know who she is. You don’t have to understand her, but do not throw around malicious accusations like that. It’s an insult to her, and it’s an insult to me.”
The words were heavy, and Vivian was left completely reeling.
She could feel his displeasure-his genuine disgust at her words.
In the past, no matter how many times she’d pulled him away from Seraphina’s side, he’d never been this harsh.
“Is he actually falling for her?”
The thought made Vivian feel like she was suffocating.
She looked at Mortimer’s hard profile, her nails digging into her palms.
She and her family were pure omegas. In a city like LA, where power was everything, they couldn’t even keep their family business without Mortimer’s backing..
