Third Person’s POV

Seraphina spent two groggy days in the Healing Center before she finally started getting her strength back.

Mortimer didn’t leave the center that entire time. Whenever paperwork needed his attention, Tade brought it straight to her room.

“Connor’s dead,” Tade murmured, leaning in close once they had finished going through the documents.

Mortimer froze.

“Hackers breached his car’s control system, too,” Tade added. “That’s why he lost control and went off-route.”

It confirmed what they’d suspected all along-someone had deliberately steered the car right at Seraphina from the very start.

It also proved Connor hadn’t acted alone. Another group had been helping him-or, more accurately, using him. Connor was just a pawn, completely expendable, meant to be thrown away the second he outlived his usefulness.

So, aside from Connor, who actually wanted Seraphina dead?

Mortimer’s mind immediately went to Caldwell.

But he dismissed it almost as fast.

As much as he couldn’t stand his cousin, Mortimer knew Caldwell wouldn’t stoop to murdering Seraphina.

What could he possibly gain from it?

“What did our people in Alaska turn up?” Mortimer asked.

“Our contacts confirmed your aunt Abigail is living up there, and Caldwell is too. But five years ago, Caldwell was an exchange student at Shadowfang Academy. Prof. Bauer was his teacher back then.”

“So Caldwell met Seraphina five years ago?”

Tade hesitated. “It’s possible.”

Mortimer processed this, keeping his face totally blank. “Keep going.”

“Right,” Tade nodded.

“From what we can tell so far, their life in Alaska looks pretty normal. When Caldwell was ten, Abigail married a businessman.”

Mortimer frowned, his voice hardening. “Is there something off about this guy?”

“That’s the weird part,” Tade said.

“His name’s Tobias Nornwald. On paper, his business looks totally legitimate. But when our guys dug into his background and where his money comes from? Nothing. A complete dead end. On top of that, some unknown organization blocked us from figuring out how Abigail moved to Alaska and kept her location a secret all these years. Alaska is out of our usual territory, so we’re going to need a little more time to investigate.”
