Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 28

Chapter 28

Mortimer’s POV

Led by the administrator, Vivian and I entered the surgical observation gallery.

From here, we had a clear view of everything happening in the OR below.

My eyes went straight to the familiar figure in the center of the room.

She was in sterile scrubs, her soft hair tucked meticulously under a surgical cap.

Her face was hidden behind layers of masks, and her star-like eyes were shielded by surgical loupes.

Even though I couldn’t see her face clearly, I recognized her instantly among the sea of healers.

The moment my eyes locked on her, I felt a sharp, subtle tug in my chest.

It was the biological resonance unique to an Alpha and his mate-even through the thick observation glass, I could feel the sheer intensity of her focus.

Every ounce of energy she poured into that scalpel seemed to vibrate through my own blood. This invisible bond was a constant reminder: she wasn’t just my partner; she was a part of my soul I could never cut away. 1

“Cardiopulmonary bypass established,” voices crackled from the OR speakers.

I watched Seraphina stand over the table, scalpel in hand, expertly opening the patient’s chest. Her expression was pure focus; her movements were steady and practiced.

“Locating the intimal tear…”

Seraphina’s voice, soft yet commanding, drifted through the speakers.

Even in a life-or-death crisis, the rhythmic calm of her voice was strangely grounding.

Watching the monitors, I saw her work with total fluid precision. There wasn’t a hint of hesitation.

Beside me, Dr. Greenwood spoke up. “Don’t worry, Alpha Mortimer. Seraphina may be young, but her skills in cardiothoracic surgery are top-tier. This operation is in good hands.”

Hearing him praise her made the corners of my mouth twitch upward withra surge of reflected pride. “She’s my mate,” I said. “I know exactly what she’s capable of.”

Dr. Greenwood froze, a look of pure shock crossing his face.

“Ahh… Seraphina is mated? And to you, Alpha Mortimer? Wow. She’s incredibly low-key. We had no idea you were her mate.”

He laughed it off, but his words sent my mood into a nose dive.

On top of that, Vivian’s presence was starting to grate on me like never before.

As an Alpha, my senses are dialed to the extreme. Right now, her breathing and that cloying, stinging perfume were like jagged noise clawing at my ears and nose.

I looked at Dr. Greenwood. After a beat, I asked, “She’s never mentioned it?” 1

The doctor’s smile stiffened. He caught my displeasure instantly.

“Well… maybe she just didn’t want the spotlight. Since you’re who you are, Alpha Mortimer, she probably didn’t want the unnecessary drama that comes with being your mate.”

That only made the knot in my chest tighter.

“Hah,” I let out a cold snort. “Sounds like I’m a mate Seraphina is embarrassed to show off.” 2

Vivian’s face went pale.

She stared down at the busy figure in the OR and let out a small huff. “Even if she’s ‘talented,’ surgery isn’t a 100% guarantee, is it? She was at the soul-healing center today for ‘sleep issues.””

Her tone was sharp with resentment.

As she watched Seraphina, her expression turned dark and hateful-gone was the “fragile, innocent” girl I usually saw. The shift made me feel a flicker of genuine revulsion.

I looked at her, my eyes cold with annoyance.

Before I could speak, Vivian put on a wounded look. “Morty, don’t be mad at me for being honest. He’s my only brother, and it’s a life-or-death situation. It’s normal for me to worry, right?”

The tears started right on cue. “You saw it yourself today. She admitted she’s not sleeping. Her insomnia is so bad she’s seeing a specialist. How can she guarantee a perfect result on a high-stakes surgery in the middle of the night?”

I didn’t answer.

I just watched Seraphina, my brow drawing into a tight line.
