Chapter 44
Seraphina’s POV
I spent the whole night waiting for the other shoe to drop.
I’d already rehearsed my lines, ready to lean into Mortimer’s inevitable rage and use it to burn this contract down with some dignity.
But the cross-examination never came.
When I walked out of the guest room the next morning, fully dressed, Mortimer was already at the table.
He didn’t mention the phone call. Instead, he’d prepped breakfast, just like the day before.
“Eat,” he said, gesturing toward two glasses of warm milk spiked with that faint, herbal soul-tonic scent.
His face was its usual wall of granite, but I couldn’t find a single crack of resentment-nothing to suggest his favorite omega had been bullied.
I was suspicious. Did Vivian suddenly find religion and decide not to snitch? That didn’t sound like the girl I knew.
I sat down, feeling off-balance, and started picking at my sandwich.
“Vivian called last night. Said you laid into her,” Mortimer said out of nowhere. His tone was casual, like he was checking the
weather.
No explosion. No suffocating Alpha aura. Nothing.
I paused.
So she had snitched.. Of course she had-Vivian never passed up a chance to play the victim.
But Mortimer’s reaction? That made zero sense.
I looked up, trying to read whatever game he was playing behind that calm mask.
“Yeah. I did,” I said, finishing a bite. I didn’t sugarcoat it.
I was still on high alert, waiting for him to snap.
To my shock, Mortimer just gave a small, slow nod.
A ghost of a smirk actually twitched at the corner of his mouth.
“Impressive. I’ve never seen you actually lose your temper before.”
I stayed quiet. But Mortimer was being weirdly chatty today.
“What made you snap?” He was watching me now, his eyes full of this strange, probing curiosity.
“She was annoying me,” I said. I didn’t even bother coming up with a better excuse.
Mortimer didn’t push it. He just leaned back and studied me, looking for something I couldn’t see.
“So,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, amused hum. “You really called her my ‘breeder’?”
I didn’t look up. The whole thing was just stupid.
Why was he so damn happy about me trashing Vivian’s status?
If I offered to hand over my Luna title right now, would he drop to his knees and thank me?

I set the rest of my sandwich down and looked him straight in the eyes. “Are you waiting for me to apologize?”
I didn’t know how much poison Vivian had dripped into his ear last night, but I knew it wasn’t the truth.
“No, I-” Mortimer started, sounding uncharacteristically tripped up. He tried to argue, but I cut him off.
“I’m not apologizing.”
I finished my breakfast in silence, stood up, and cleared the table.
The mechanical grind of the garbage disposal filled the dead air in the room.
“I’m done. Take your time.”
I walked out of the kitchen and headed for the foyer to swap my shoes.
Mortimer was right on my heels. He stood there, watching me with a look that was a messy mix of confusion and… something else.
“You mad?”
I didn’t even blink. “No.”
I grabbed my bag, ready to bolt, but his hand caught my arm.
His palm was warm, but the grip was lighter this time-controlled.
I looked back, my brow furrowing. “Now what?”
“Wait up,” he said. It wasn’t a request.
Before I could argue, he’d already grabbed his keys. “I’m driving you.”
“I don’t-”
“I have to hit the hospital anyway,” he cut in. “It’s on the way.”
Right. Rolf was supposed to be moved out of the ICU today. As the “family-in-waiting,” it made sense for Mortimer to be there.
I hesitated for a second, then gave in. “Fine. Thanks.”
I kept it clinical. Distant.
Out of the corner of my eye, I saw him tilt his head, staring at me for a long beat before he finally looked
We stood in front of the villa’s elevator, side by side.
Our blurry reflections stared back at us from the polished metal doors.
