Chapter 47
Third Person’s POV
Mortimer turned his head, catching a healer’s assistant eyeing him with a cautious, calculating gaze.
He gave a stiff, distant nod, his voice dropping into a heavy rumble. “Where is she?”
“Dr. Seraphina just headed over to the inpatient tower to do her rounds,” the assistant replied quietly.
She went to the inpatient wards?
Mortimer had literally just walked from that exact direction. How the hell did he fail to catch everra single trace of her pheromones along the way?
His stomach dropped. Without another word, he pivoted on his heel and strode right back toward the hospital tower.
The second he stepped out of the elevator on the VIP floor, that familiar, crisp voice echoed faintly down the quiet corridor. It was cool, professional, yet carried an undeniable, soothing power.
“Your aura is stabilizing nicely. However, your damaged wolf is still in the active recovery phase. We’ll need to supplement your treatment with Moonlight Herb extract for a few more days.”
“The lacerations haven’t worsened, and they’re healing cleanly. The regenerative energy in your bone marrow is actively
pooling back together.”
“Thank you… thank you so much, Dr. Seraphina.”
Following the sound of her voice, Mortimer walked toward the high-security VIP sector. Just as he reached for the handle of the ward door, it swung open from the inside.
Seraphina stepped out, tucking her medical clipboard under her arm, preparing to head up to the next floor-and walked straight into him.
Mortimer saw her footsteps hitch for a fraction of a second.
And then… she just gave him a polite, perfunctory nod. There wasn’t a single ounce of intimacy in the gesture. It was the exact kind of sterile, courteous acknowledgment you’d give a total stranger holding the door for you at a coffee shop.
Without missing a beat, she turned sideways and stepped into the open elevator next to them, her face a mask of absolute calm.
The elevator was empty. Mortimer stepped in right beside her.
He stared at the glowing numbers on the digital display, his thin lips pressed into a hard line.
Even though the suffocating silence in the tiny metal box was enough to drive a man insane, he physically couldn’t tear his eyes away from her.
Just as the elevator dinged and the doors slid open for the upper-level promenade, Mortimer quickly called out. “Sera.”
Seraphina stopped in her tracks.
When she turned to look at him, he realized with a sinking heart that there was absolutely no surprise or warmth in her eyes. Instead, she was looking at him with a clinical, almost anthropological curiosity-like she was observing a completely alien species.
That specific look made Mortimer’s skin crawl with discomfort. He awkwardly averted his gaze, swallowing his pride.
He dropped his voice. “About what happened in the parking lot earlier… I’m sorry.”
Seraphina genuinely paused, blinking once before offering a polite nod. “Okay. I accept your apology. Now, I have rounds to finish. If there’s nothing else, I’m going to get back to work.”

Watching her switch into full ‘customer service’ mode, the gaping, agonizing void in Mortimer’s chest-ripped open by their strained mating bond-didn’t fill up. It just violently deepened.
Even though she had accepted his apology with zero friction, he still couldn’t stop himself from chasing after her, desperately trying to justify his actions. “I was just terrified her weak wolf syndrome was going to trigger. You know she saved my life back then, so I just… I overreacted.” 1
He carefully scrutinized Seraphina’s face, waiting for a crack in her armor:
Hearing his excuse, Seraphina’s expression remained perfectly natural. She just nodded in agreement.
Her tone was completely casual. “Yeah. In a place like the healing center, family members panic and lose their minds all the time. I’m used to seeing it. It’s totally understandable.”
Hearing the word ‘family’ casually drop from her mouth again instantly ignited a nameless, foxic fire in Mortimer’s chest.
“I told you,” he ground out, dropping his voice into a harsh, warning whisper. “I am not her family.”
not
He glared at Seraphina. She genuinely didn’t seem to understand why he was so obsessed with correcting that specific title.
“Okay. Noted.” Seraphina gave an agreeable, highly patronizing nod, then completely ignored him and continued walking down the hall toward the next VIP suite.
Mortimer felt like a stubborn, miserable fire was burning inside his ribs. He desperately needed Seraphina to see the agonizing burden he was carrying, to understand that his hands were tied.
He stuck to her like a shadow, stubbornly pushing his narrative through the heavy scent of medical antiseptics. “Vivian’s wolf was shattered because of me. I can’t just turn a blind eye to her, I—”
Finally, Seraphina ran out of patience and stopped dead in her tracks.
She whipped around, her clear, icy gaze stabbing directly into him.
Seeing the unfiltered, absolute annoyance and freezing detachment in her eyes, every single word caught in Mortimer’s throat. It was as if his vocal cords had been flash-frozen. He couldn’t force a single syllable out.
Then, under his suddenly terrified and guilty stare, Seraphina looked him dead in the eye and dropped a single, heavily
punctuated sentence.
“I. Said. I. Got. It.”
