Third Person’s POV

At the mention of the title “Luna Seraphina’s finger hitched for a split second over her tablet. She didn’t acknowledge it. Instead, she kept her voice strictly business. “Is your wolf conscious?”

“Sort of,” Rolf managed. “Just feels weak. The link is pretty fuzzy.”

Seraphina nodded. “You just crawled out of the ICU. Soul-Fatigue is standard. Recovery isn’t a sprint; you’re going to have to pace yourself.”

She scribbled something quickly on her screen. “Are you losing your healing factor? Any wounds refusing to close?”

Rolf shook his head. “No. It’s just…there’s this dull, constant throbbing.”

“Scale of one to ten?”

“Manageable.”

“Fine.” She set the tablet down and flicked her gaze toward the two standing by the bed. “Family-get his shirt open. I need to check the primary incision.”

A strange and deathly silence fell over the ward.

Mortimer was leaning against the door, motionless.

The word “family” was giving him a literal stress response. Every time Seraphina used it to lump him in with the Davises, he felt

a nerve twitch in his jaw.

Vivian, meanwhile, just looked at Mortimer, waiting for him to do the heavy lifting like he always did. 1

Neither of them moved. The two people closest to Rolf just stood there like statues.

Seraphina’s brow hit a hard, icy line. She didn’t wait. She reached out to unbutton Rolf’s shirt herself.

Rolf jumped, looking flustered. “I can do it…”

Seraphina cut him a look so cold it made his heart skip. “You’re in recovery. Stop moving.”

Her fingers brushed the first button.

A second later, a large, calloused hand intercepted her, blocking the move.

She looked up. Mortimer had moved in, his face a mask of irritation.

He didn’t say a word, but his hands moved fast, popping the buttons and pulling the fabric back to expose Rolf’s chest.

“Thanks… Alpha Mortimer,” Rolf stammered. One look at Mortimer’s dark expression triggered his omega instincts; he couldn’t even hold eye contact.

Seraphina ignored Mortimer’s mood. She leaned in, letting a trickle of healing energy probe the wound. “The swelling is normal. It’ll go down. Your wolf is holding steady. If you’re still stable tomorrow, we’ll try to get you on your feet.”

She finished her notes and turned around, her eyes sweeping over Mortimer and Vivian with zero warmth. “The next few days are critical. You ‘family’ members need to stay on top of the post-op care.”

She directed the last part straight at Vivian.

But Mortimer wasn’t listening. His head was spinning from the way Seraphina was treating him like a stranger. That word—” family”—was like a jagged nail in his boot. He couldn’t think straight.

Vivian wasn’t listening either. Her eyes were glued to Mortimer, tracking the way he couldn’t stop looking at Seraphina.

To her, Seraphina’s voice was just grating static-the sound of a rival moving in on her territory.

When neither of them acknowledged her, Seraphina’s expression went stone-cold.

She raised her voice, letting the words drop like a lead weight. “Excuse me?”

Mortimer let out a ragged sigh and rubbed his temples

He looked at Vivian, his voice dropping into a low growl. “Did you get all that? The instructions?”

Vivian snapped out of it, flicking a look of pure venom at Seraphina. “Got it.”

Seraphina didn’t waste another breath. She gave Rolf a clipped “Rest up” and walked out of the room without looking back.

Mortimer instinctively started to follow, but Vivian’s hand shot out, grabbing his arm. “Morty.”

“What?” Mortimer stopped, his voice sharp with a jagged, restless energy.

Vivian bit her lip, looking like she was holding back a flood.

“Just say it, Vivian,” Mortimer snapped, his patience redlining.

Vivian felt her heart sink.

Mortimer was losing his “nice guy” act with her, and she hated Seraphina for it.

She didn’t believe in the mating bond or “fate” –she just saw a woman who was successfully poisoning her Alpha.

“I want to move Rolf to Iceblade Healing Center,” Vivian whispered “The staff there is better, and it’s private. He’d recover
