Chapter 50
Mortimer’s POV
After I left Rolf’s room, I headed back toward the surgical wing where Seraphina’s office was.
I’d checked her schedule-no surgeries this morning, just patient consultations.
But when I got there, the hallway was a mess. The benches were packed, and the air was a thick, vibrating soup of random pheromones.
I stood in the corridor for a minute, then turned on my heel and walked away.
I was acting like a freak. My obsession with Seraphina lately was getting out of hand, and it wasn’t my style.
But every time I pictured that cold, dead look in her eyes, my usual “Alpha in control” confidence felt like a popped balloon.
I hated it. It felt like something was sliding out of my grip, and I was fumbling in the dark to catch it.
Barton didn’t help; he just let out a mocking huff in the back of my mind and offered zero advice.
This was wrong.
My life was supposed to be about the Blade Pack and the Craig Group. I lived on a schedule where every second was weaponized.
I’d mated with Seraphina specifically because she was low-maintenance.
She was supposed to be the part of my life I didn’t have to think about.
I told myself it was just Wilmot’s head-games getting to me.
I needed to snap out of it.
I walked out of the building with a forced, heavy stride, determined to leave her behind.
Back at the office, during a break between back-to-back meetings, Tade leaned in close. He had this pathetic, expectant look on his face, probably dreaming of a promotion for helping me “fix” my mating.
“So, Alpha Mortimer… how’d Luna Seraphina like the performance yesterday?”
I stopped and cut him a look that could’ve frozen hell. “Does the Craig Group pay you to gossip like a bored housewife?”
Tade went pale. He looked totally lost.
“From now on, keep your nose out of my personal life while you’re on the clock,” I snapped.
“Right. Sorry, Alpha,” he muttered, shrugging his shoulders.
I took two steps, then spun around to glare at him again. He froze like a deer in headlights.
“If you’re so bored, I hear we have a new project starting up in Africa. You want to lead it?”
Tade started waving his hands frantically. “No, no! I’m busy, Alpha. My schedule is just as packed as yours!”
I gave him one last warning look before heading into my office. 1
It was the end of the year, which meant the Craig Group was a war zone of closing deals and mountain-high paperwork. I leaned
into it.
I buried myself in work, packing my schedule so tight I didn’t have a spare second to breathe, let alone think about Seraphina.
It worked. For ten hours, she was a ghost.

Chapter 50
But as the sun went down, the rain started again.
It wasn’t the monsoon from yesterday, just a steady, cold drizzle.
Winter in LA-the second it rains, the temperature drops off a cliff.
“Back to the pack, Alpha Mortimer?” George, the driver, asked quietly.

I rubbed my aching temples, watching the rain streak across the window. I hesitated for maybe two seconds before the words forced themselves out. “Take me to Shadowfang.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
Seraphina’s POV
I was still at Shadowfang.
I wasn’t on the night shift, so I did my final rounds, making sure the patients’ soul-rhythms were steady before heading for the
exit.
“Sera! It’s pouring. You got an umbrella?” Trista called out, catching up to me.
“I’m fine. My cab’s right outside,” I said, giving her a quick smile.
Trista wasn’t having it. She shoved a heavy, black umbrella into my hand. “It’s freezing out. Even for a wolf, this is flu weather. I’m on the night shift; just take it.”
I didn’t fight her. “Thanks.”
“Oh, hey-didn’t you say you were looking for a place?” Trista remembered.
“A friend of mine has a younger brother with an empty apartment near the center. The whole family is moving overseas. I told her you were hunting; you want to go take a look?”
My mood lifted instantly. My eyes probably lit up.
