Chapter 57
Third Person’s POV
Mortimer choked on his own absurd thoughts, which triggered a violent coughing fit.
The burning in his lungs was brutal. He knew this was a self-inflicted wound-the price of his midnight stunt on the balcony.
The last time he felt this wrecked was a year ago, when he’d taken a hit of wolfsbane toxin during a border dispute.
That stuff was designed to paralyze the wolf and slow-cook your internal organs. He’d been stuck in a fever dream for days.
Back then, Seraphina had cleared her entire schedule at the healing center to nurse him.
She’d been a ghost by his side, her soft, steady “mate” scent acting as the only painkiller that actually worked.
Looking back now, he realized how much of her devotion he’d treated like background noise.
But today, he wasn’t going to blow it.
He figured no matter how much she resented him, she still gave a damn. 1
Even if it was just her “healer’s guilt,” she was staying. She was calling out of work for him.
The thought made his lips twitch into a smirk. Even the body aches felt a little lighter.
Out in the living room, Seraphina didn’t call the healing center. She pulled up Tade’s contact and hit dial.
Tade picked up on the second ring, his voice sounding a little too eager. “Luna! Good morning. What can I do for you?”
She’d heard the title before.
Back when she was delusional, hearing Tade call her “Luna” while Mortimer stood by in silence used to make her heart do a backflip.
Now, it just made her skin crawl. But she didn’t have time to correct his vocabulary.
“Tade, Mortimer has a fever,” she said, her voice clinical.
“Right, Luna. Alpha Mortimer already called me.”
Seraphina blinked. He already called?
“Oh. Good. Then since he’s at the villa alone, could you come over and look after him? Or maybe send over an omega from the staff who knows his routine?”
Since Mortimer had already handled the office side of things, she figured it was time to hand the “patient” over to the professionals.
There was a dead silence on the other end for three seconds. Then: “Wait… what?”
Tade’s voice went up an octave, sounding genuinely panicked. “Luna… you want me to go take care of Alpha Mortimer?”
“Is that a problem?” she asked, hearing the hesitation.
“Luna, look… the Craig Group is in the middle of three massive cross-border deals. Now that Alpha Mortimer is down, I’m the only one left to steer the ship. I literally cannot leave my desk, Luna. I’m drowning over here.”
“I see,” Seraphina muttered.
She wasn’t a corporate shark, but she knew Tade wasn’t entirely lying.
End-of-year in a global conglomerate was a bloodbath.

As Mortimer’s right hand, Tade being MIA would be a disaster.
“Luna, please… you have to stay with him. You know how he is-if it’s not pack business or a balance sheet, he doesn’t give a damn. If he’s sick and alone, he’s going to be… he’s going to be miserable.”
Silence.
Was it just her, or did Tade sound like he was about to burst into tears?
Mortimer was an Alpha; even with a fever, he wasn’t exactly a helpless toddler.
She sighed. Clearly, the pressure at the Craig Group was breaking people. Even a shark like Tade was reaching his limit.
She didn’t have the heart to push him. “Fine, Tade. Do what you have to do.”
“Thank you, Luna! Seriously, you’re a lifesaver. I’ll leave him in your hands!”
He hung up so fast she wondered if he’d set a world record. He was clearly terrified she’d change her mind and make him play nursemaid.
“Tade, who the hell was that? You look like you just saw a ghost,” Yolanda, the Chief Secretary, asked as she wandered by with a
coffee.
Tade leaned against his desk, waiting for his heart rate to drop after that blatant lie. “The boss’s wife,” he muttered.
