Chapter 63
Seraphina’s POV
For once, the man who usually dietated every breath in the room was being disturbingly compliant.
“I don’t have time to find you a suit,” I said, testing him. “I’m just grabbing a parka for you to throw un. Deal with it.”
He didn’t snap. He just lowered his head, shifting his weight to make it easier for me to wrap the coat around him. “Whatever you say,” he murmured.
His voice was terrifyingly soft, laced with a needy, submissive edge I’d never heard before.
Vivian was standing two feet away, her eyes boring into us.
I caught a glimpse of her out of the corner of my eye-her nails were digging so hard into her thighs they were leaving angry, red crescents.
The air around her was turning toxic with jealousy.
I grabbed a heavy coat from the master suite, draped it over him, and snatched the keys to his Cullinan from the foyer table. We’re not waiting for a driver,” I told him. “I’m behind the wheel.”
Mortimer nodded again. “Fine.”
A ghost of a smirk actually touched his lips.
Looking at him, you’d never guess he had a hole in his palm that was currently ruining the carpet.
“Morty, let me come with you,” Vivian said, stepping forward. Behind Mortimer’s back, she shot me a look of pure,
unadulterated venom.
I didn’t give a damn. I hit the elevator button.
”
Mortimer turned to her, his voice flat. “Vivian, you’re rattled. Stay here and rest. I’ll have someone drive you home later.” 1
Vivian froze. She looked like he’d slapped her. “Morty…”
Looking at his death-mask of a face, I figured he was either too delirious from the fever or too bled out to play nice with his little
rose.
I stayed out of it. I was just the designated driver to the clinic; their drama wasn’t on my clock.
The elevator chimed. I stepped in first. Mortimer followed, his arm reaching out to block Vivian as she tried to squeeze in behind him.
“Vivian. Listen to me.” Mortimer’s brow hit a hard line, his lips turning a bloodless white.
Vivian knew when to back off. She stopped, but she shot one last command at me. “Seraphina. Take care of him.”
The doors slid shut before I could even think of a comeback.
I could practically see her mask of “fragile girl” cracking into something feral on the other side of that metal.
I stood there in silence. I didn’t care how he got hurt.
Suddenly, a massive weight slammed into my side. I reached out instinctively to steady him.
Mortimer was swaying, his eyelids fluttering like a dying flashlight.
“I feel… light,” he rasped, leaning heavily into me.

He was too cluse: His hot, feverish breath was ghosting over the shell of my ear.
Professional ethics forced me to tighten my grip, but Mortimer was six-three and solid muscle. I couldn’t hold him up with one
arm.
The doors opened at the garage level. The second we stepped out, my shoulder dipped under his full weight.
“Mortimer,” I hissed through my teeth, my patience redlining.
“Sorry. Legs are gone. Can’t stand,” he whispered against my ear.
The heat coming off him was intense, making the back of my neck prickle.
His “model-standard” physique was officially a liability.
I had to hook both arms under his armpits, dragging him toward the car like a casualty of war.
To anyone watching, it probably looked like a desperate, intimate embrace.
Mortimer’s eyes were closed now, his chin resting right on my shoulder.
I finally reached the Cullinan and wrenched the door open. “Get in. Now.”
No response. He looked like he’d checked out completely.
My stomach did a slow roll. “Mortimer?”
