Third Person’s POV
Mortimer didn’t pull any moves. He just cracked his eyes open a sliver, his gaze locking onto Seraphina’s profile as she hovered inches away.
Even with his brain being slow-cooked by the fever, his body was redlining.
The second she got close, his instincts went wild. The scent of her-cold, sweet medicinal herbs-was hitting his system harder than any sedative.
Inside his head, Barton was pacing, letting out a low, rhythmic growl that vibrated in Mortimer’s skull, “Oh… Mate…”
Mortimer’s Adam’s apple bobbed.
Seraphina kept her eyes down, refusing to look at him. She yanked the seatbelt across his chest with a sharp, practiced motion.
The sound of the buckle locking echoed in the quiet cabin like a gunshot.
Mortimer snapped back to reality, a flicker of something uncomfortable crossing his face as he realized how much he’d been staring.
Seraphina sat back, ignored him, and threw the car into gear. She floored it.
The Cullinan roared to life, lunging out of the luxury garage and into the street.
It was rush hour in LA-a total parking lot.
But Mortimer watched in a daze as she tore through the gridlock like it wasn’t there.
She was threading the massive SUV through gaps that shouldn’t have existed, never once hitting the brakes.
He leaned back into the leather, watching her drive.
She was stone-faced and silent, but the faint scent coming off her neck was fermenting in the warm car, poking at his predatory
core.
Her lashes were long, casting soft shadows over her cheeks.
Every time she blinked, it felt like a feather brushing against his heart-irritating, sharp, and addictive.
His hand drifted to his stomach, right where her arm had brushed him. He could still feel the phantom heat of her touch through his clothes.
“Didn’t know you were a getaway driver,” he rasped, trying to break the heavy silence.
Seraphina didn’t take her eyes off the road.
“I just know the short-cuts.”
She didn’t look at him. She clearly wasn’t in the mood for small talk.
But Mortimer was desperate for a connection. “If you’re this good behind the wheel, why do you always take the train?”
“Public transit is easier,” she muttered, her focus on a merging lane.
She could tell he was going to keep poking. “Save your breath, Mortimer. You’re already low on oxygen.”
The rest of his sentence died in his throat.
He opened his mouth, felt a flash of genuine “hurt feelings,” but shut it.

He could hear the sharp edge of annoyance in her voice. She was officially done with him.
They hit Shadowfang Medical in record time. She parked the beast of a car and circled around to rip his door open.
“Can you walk?” She really didn’t want to touch him again. Not after the car ride.
Mortimer swung his long legs out, looking up at her with eyes that were glassy and pathetic. “I think 30.”
He took two steps, executed a perfect, shaky stumble, and started to tip forward.
Reflex took over. Seraphina caught him before he hit the asphalt.
Mortimer looked down at her, his pale face a mask of fake apology. “Am I being a nuisance?”
“Yes.”
Silence.
“Move,” she sighed. She had no choice. She took his weight again, bracing herself as she hauled him toward the ER.
The Shadowfang ER was a war zone. Flu season had turned the waiting room into a sea of miserable wolves.
The line for emergency surgery was out the door.
“Sit,” she commanded, dropping him into a plastic chair in the waiting area.
She disappeared into the surgical wing and came back five minutes later with a tray.
