Ex-Mate Wants Me Back (Seraphina and Mortimer) novel Chapter 83

Chapter 83

Third Person’s POV

“So, all those late nights… you’ve been spending them with him?”

Seraphina stayed silent. To Mortimer, silence was a signed confession.

That was the final blow. Whatever was left of his sanity just went up in smoke.

The red in his eyes deepened, the predator’s rage finally breaking the levee. “If I hadn’t caught you tonight, were you just going to keep lying to my face?”

Seraphina’s first instinct was to nod.

But then, under the harsh fluorescent lights of the breakroom, she saw his face. He didn’t just look livid; he looked wrecked. Like he was one second away from a total emotional meltdown.

She blinked, genuinely baffled. “What the hell did a dog ever do to this man?” she wondered. Did he get mauled as a kid? Was he chased by a pack of strays?

The image of the high-and-mighty Alpha Mortimer running for his life from a golden retriever flashed through her head, and she almost lost it and laughed.

The fact that she was drifting off-task again nearly sent Mortimer over the edge.

He didn’t miss the flicker of a smile in her eyes. It felt like a serrated blade to his ego. “So, just the thought of him makes you that happy?”

His voice was a jagged snarl, vibrating with a manic energy that finally snapped her back to reality.

She pictured Dash-his wagging tail, his clumsy, happy gallop, the way his ears flopped when he ran. The smile on her face widened. “Yeah. He’s adorable.”

She paused, sensing the toxic, aggressive pheromones rolling off Mortimer in waves.

She tried to be reasonable. “Look, I know it’s not your thing. I’m not bringing him back to the Blades. You don’t have to worry.”

She sounded sincere. Like she was making a promise.

“I already signed a lease on a new place. I’ll be living there. It won’t affect you at all.”

Mortimer stared at her. She was standing there, calm as a lake, telling him she’d found a “love nest” andavas moving in with another man like it was a grocery list.

His breathing was a ragged, mechanical grind in the quiet room. Finally, he let out a sharp, hysterical laugh.

“You’re unbelievable, Seraphina. Two homes…”

He choked on the words, a desperate, low growl caught in his throat. “Did you ever think to ask me? What am I to you, exactly?”

He was practically roaring now, the sound echoing off the sterile walls. “You’re actually planning to move out? For him?”

Seraphina went quiet again.

She’d been wanting to move out for months.

She just hadn’t found the right excuse.

But now, seeing his borderline psychotic hatred for dogs, she knew she had to.

For Dash’s safety and for her own peace of mind, she’d tried to keep the dog a secret to ensure a “peaceful” divorce.

But since the cat–or the dog-was out of the bag, might as well lay the cards on the table.

“The contract is almost up. Living apart won’t change our legal status. Don’t worry, I’ll still play the part of the Luna when you need me to. I won’t make it a mess for you.”

Right. Not only was she keeping a lover, she was officially filing for a trial separation. 1

Mortimer couldn’t even describe the feeling. It was like a physical weight was crushing his chest, a dull, agonizing ache in the center of his soul where the mating bond was screaming

He opened his mouth, his Alpha instinct telling him to use his aura to break her, to force her to stay.

But the terror of losing her for good won out. He felt his pride dissolve. He looked at her, his voice dropping into a low, broken plea. “Drop it… forget the whole thing. I won’t even hold it against you.”
