Chapter 97

Third Person’s POV
Mortimer had followed her out. He was right behind her, his presence a heavy, agitated weight in the cold morning air.
Seraphina stopped and turned to face him. “Something else?”
Mortimer’s jaw was a hard, tight line-his universal tell for frustration. “Are you 100% sure Rolf’s crash was Vivian’s doing?”
Seraphina didn’t blink. “I’m not.”
In her head, she was at about 90%.
But she wasn’t giving him that satisfaction. She didn’t have the paper trail yet, and she wasn’t going to speculate for his benefit.
Mortimer’s brow hit a deep, angry knot.
“If you aren’t sure, how the hell could you say that in front of a live audience? Do you have any idea what that does?” 2
He stopped himself before the real words came out, his voice turning sharp and clinical when he saw her blank expression.
“People are going to believe you. Vivian is going to get shredded by a digital mob, and the stress is going to tank her condition. Her wolf is already fragile. Do you even care?”
He was practically vibrating with a mix of accusation and desperate need.
He was staring at her, searching for a crack, a spark of jealousy, a sign that she still felt something.
But Seraphina stayed a fortress.
Her indifference was a wildfire he couldn’t put out, and it was driving his Alpha instincts into a paranoid frenzy.
Mortimer’s face darkened as he stared fixedly at Seraphina’s expressionless face.
Seraphina looked at him, her expression bordering on bored/”I’m getting shredded by a mob, too. I’m just returning the favor. Why is it only a problem when she’s the target?”
Mortimer’s eyes flared.
He let out a sharp, jagged huff of a laugh. “What? Are you trying to copy her now? You want to play the ‘fragile wolf’ card too?”
The words hit the air and stayed there. Mortimer froze. A flicker of immediate regret crossed his face, but he was too far gone to
take it back.
Seraphina stared at him. That sneering, almost malicious look on his face triggered a memory-the text he’d sent while she was buried under the Alaskan permafrost.
The one where he accused her of lying just to get his attention while she was literally suffocating.
“Right. This is exactly what he looked like when he sent that.”
She checked her pulse. It didn’t even skip. The pain was gone, replaced by a dull, permanent numbness.
Tade caught up just in time to hear that last toxic remark.
He covered his face.
“Thank you, Moon Goddess,” he thought. “You gave this man the face of a god and the bank account of a king, but you gave him a mouth that functions like a landmine.”
Tade wanted to intervene, but Seraphina beat him to it.

She gave a small, hollow laugh. “I’m fine, Alpha Mortimer. Don’t waste your curses on me.”
She turned and headed for the parking lot.
It was Dash’s discharge day, and she wasn’t missing it for another round of emotional combat.
“Luna Seraphina!” Tade scrambled past Mortimer and blocked her path.
“Tade,” she said, giving him a polite nod.
“Alpha Mortimer hasn’t slept in twenty-four hours. He’s on edge. He didn’t mean that-it’s just the stress talking. Don’t take it to heart.”
Mortimer scowled but stayed silent, looking like a teenager caught in a liè
“We were in the middle of a massive New York project last night,” Tade continued, flashing her a desperate, pleading smile. ” The second he heard you were in trouble, he called the jet. He dropped everything to get back here for you.”
Tade left out the part where the pilot had to fly at Mach speeds because Mortimer’s eyes were glowing gold and he looked ready to tear the cabin apart. Or the part where the driver nearly melted the engine getting them from the airport.
