Chapter 10
I snapped out of it and immediately started struggling.
But the difference in strength was too much. I was no match for him.
Finally, he lost patience and plumed me against the wall.
His arins caged me in tight, cutting off any chance of escape.
The faint smell of alcohol surrounded me–not overwhelming, but definitely there.
I glared up at him, silently furious.
But he was staring right back at me.
And then his voice dropped–softer now, like he was trying to smooth things over.
“You’re still mad, huh.
“Alright, fine. I’m sorry. This whole thing’s on me.
“After my parents switched my application back to NYU, they changed the password. I couldn’t get back in to fix it. I had no way to change it to match yours.”
Even now he still thought what he did was right.
That sacrificing my future to keep Harper happy was somehow justified.
I couldn’t hold it in anymore.
“Then why didn’t you tell me? Why didn’t you let me switch mine back too?
“Is Harper really that important to you? Important enough to throw away my future just to make her happy?”
Nathon took a deep breath, and I could hear the irritation creeping back into his voice.
“Why do you always have to go after Harper like this? No wonder she didn’t want to deal with you at the same school.
“Every time you see her, you turn into this–this porcupine. All spikes and attitude.”
Even though I thought I’d already hit rock bottom–thought there was no way he could hurt me worse than he already had-
His words still stabbed through me like needles. Sharp. Relentless. Everywhere.
The motion–sensor light in the hallway had already gone dark. Moonlight filtered through the glass door, casting shadows across Nathon’s face.
I’d memorized every angle of that face. Every line. Every expression.
But standing here now, I felt like I was looking at a stranger.
Neither of us spoke.
The silence stretched out, heavy and suffocating.

Finally, Nathon seemed to crack. Ills tone shifted–softened–like he was trying to coax a scared animal.
“Okay, okay. You win
But it’s done now, Alina. There’s no point fighting it anymore. Just… let it go.
