Chapter 11
These words hit me like lightning–sudden, blinding, waking me up from whatever fog I’d been living in.
He knew.
Nathon knew everything.
All those feelings I’d kept hidden. All those quiet hopes I’d never said out loud.
Even that drunken kiss under the mistletoe–he knew exactly what it meant.
And he’d still chosen to ignore it.
He’d gambled with my entire future because he was that sure I’d keep loving him no matter what he did.
I stared at him, unable to believe what I was hearing.
When I didn’t respond, he leaned in and pressed a soft kiss to my forehead–like that was supposed to fix everything.
I snapped.
I shoved him away with everything I had.
The motion–sensor light flickered back on.
Nathon stumbled backward, clearly not expecting the force behind it. His face flushed with embarrassment.
“Alina, what the hell? Why’d you push me?
“You’ve been throwing a fit about not wanting to go to Miami because you’re scared I’ll date someone else. So now you know I won’t. Isn’t that what you wanted?”
My voice came out cold. Flat.
“Who asked you to wait? Date whoever you want. I don’t care.”
Nathon let out this long, exasperated sigh.
“You’ve always been stubborn. Since we were kids. Just admit you like me. It’s not that hard. I’m not gonna laugh at you. You don’t have to be
embarrassed-”
I cut him off.
“Stop.
“Nathon, I’m telling you right now: I don’t like you. And I don’t want you to wait for me.
“From now on, we’re done. I’m not forgiving someone who screwed with my future like it was a joke.”
I turned and walked toward the stairs, not bothering to look back at his face.
But he wasn’t letting it go.
Chapter 11
He caught up to me in two struies, following me up the steps.
“Alina, don’t talk to me like that. Who the hell screwed with your future?
“I switched my application to Miami with you, didn’t I? It’s not my fault my parents went nuclear and changed it back without asking me.
“And Miami’s a great school. You’ll get way more study abroad opportunities than you would at NYU. I went through all of this with you last night–I was serious about it. How is your future ruined? You’re acting like I forced you into community college or something. Is that really
necessary?”
He kept talking. Kept following me. His voice getting louder, more defensive with every word.
Finally, he grabbed my wrist and yanked me to a stop.
“And another thing–your family’s struggling financially, right? I offered to cover your tuition and living expenses for all four years.
