Chapter 102
Vivian’s question hung in the air like a blade over Damian’s neck.
For half a second, the lie was already forming on his tongue. No. Of course not. Why would I do something like that.
But Vivian’s eyes cut him off before he could speak.
“You’d better tell me the truth. I swear to God, Damian, if you had Ethan beaten, and then tried to lie to me about it-”
The threat hung in the air between them, unfinished and absolute.
Ever since his return, Vivian had never spoken to him in such a tone. This was the first time.
A drop of cold sweat trickled down Damian’s forehead as his mind raced.
He ran through every possible denial in under two seconds and discarded every one of them. Vivian already knew. He could see it in her face. Lying now would only make it worse.
So he let his shoulders sag. He let his eyes go glassy, wounded, defeated.
“…Yes,” he said quietly. “It was me. I sent the men after him.”
Vivian’s jaw tightened.
“But Vivian, listen to me.” His voice cracked, rising with practiced anguish. “I couldn’t stand it anymore. He divorced you-he was the one who wanted out-and before the paperwork was even finished, he was already parading himself around as some rich woman’s kept man, in public, where everyone could see.”
“Do you know what that did to you? The whispers? The humiliation? I couldn’t just sit there and watch him disrespect you like that. Everything I did, I did because I couldn’t bear to see you hurt!”
Vivian said nothing. Her face was unreadable.
