The vase shattered against the wall. Crystal fragments exploded across the hardwood floor like shrapnel.
Vivian grabbed another – the Lalique piece Ethan had bought her for their second anniversary hurled it at the opposite wall.
Crash.
Her chest heaved. Her hands shook. The living room looked like a war zone – broken glass, overturned furniture, picture frames face-down on the floor.
Three years. Three years of marriage in this house. Their house.
And he’d crawled into Sophie’s bed.
Her phone sat on the coffee table, screen still glowing with those photos. Ethan’s bare chest. Sophie’s smug face pressed against his skin. That caption – Some men are worth stealing.
Vivian’s vision blurred red.
She’d called him seventeen times. Seventeen. Every call went to voicemail.
Because he was too busy screwing her ex-best friend.
‘No. He’s not screwing anyone. He’s broke. He’s pathetic. He left me and now he’s desperate and Sophie’s using him and he’ll come crawling back any day now begging me to take him back and I’ll laugh in his face-‘
Her thoughts spiraled, incoherent, contradictory.
But one thing was clear.
Sophie Whitfield was going to pay.
By the time Vivian reached Sophie’s apartment building, it was a downpour – sheets of water hammering the windshield, thunder rolling across the sky.
She didn’t care.
She parked crooked across two spaces, grabbed her purse, and ran for the entrance. Her heels splashed through puddles. Her hair plastered to her face.
Fourth floor. Apartment 4C.
She pounded on the door.
“SOPHIE!” Her voice cracked. “OPEN THE DOOR!”
Nothing.

She pounded harder. “I KNOW YOU’RE IN THERE! OPEN UP!”
The door swung open.
Sophie stood in the doorway wearing a silk robe, hair tousled, lipstick smudged. She looked like she’d just rolled out of bed.
She probably had.
“Vivian.” Sophie’s smile was slow, lazy. “What a surprise.”
Vivian’s hand flew.
The slap cracked across Sophie’s face hard enough to snap her head sideways.
Sophie stumbled back, hand pressed to her cheek. Her eyes went wide – then narrowed.
“You bitch-”
Vivian shoved past her into the apartment. “Where is he? WHERE IS HE?”
“Get out of my house-”
“You stole my husband!” Vivian whirled on her. “You drugged him and you dragged him here and you-”
“Stole?” Sophie’s laugh was sharp, ugly. “You can’t steal something that was thrown away, Vivian.”
“He’s MINE-”
“He was never yours!” Sophie’s voice rose to a shriek. “You used him! You married him because Damian dumped you and you needed someone to lick your wounds and Ethan was stupid enough to say yes!”
Vivian froze.
The air went cold.
“What did you just say?”
Sophie’s chest heaved. Her eyes were wild, furious. “You heard me. Three years ago, Damian Hale broke your heart and you went running to the nearest warm body you could find. Ethan Carter – your rebound. Your replacement. And you’ve been stringing him along ever since.”
“That’s not-”
“It IS!” Sophie stepped forward. “I was there, Vivian. I watched you cry over Damian for six months. I watched you use Ethan like a band-aid. And now you’ve got Damian back and you STILL won’t let Ethan go? You selfish, hypocritical-”
Vivian lunged.
They collided in the middle of the living room. Nails raking skin. Hair yanked. Sophie’s robe tore. Vivian’s purse hit the floor and spilled its contents across the carpet.
