Chapter 29
(38)
She shrugs her shoulders at him.
It’s Cassian’s turn. He grins like the devil. “Alright, scholarship girl, dare, sit in his lap until your next turn.” He says, and I want to hug him, but punch him
at the same time for that. The thought of her ass on my thighs, so close to my cock has me leaning back in my seat mentally as I try to prepare myself for
the incoming erection.
She hesitates., for just for a second; Then she’s up, and settling onto my thighs like she owns the seat.
She does. My hands rest on her hips, fas soon as her ass hits my thighs, my fingers drumming lazily on her hips as I try not to focus too much on her scent..
Her weight’s warm, and grounding, but the heat between us is anything but calm. Tension locks in my veins as I restrain my sinful thoughts.
My phone buzzes in my jacket pocket.
I pull it out without moving her off me, to see that it’s an email.
From: Father.
Subject: Prepare.
Message: Seraphina arrives next week. She will attend Ravenscroft Academy. Your engagement will be announced privately first, then publicly. Do not
disappoint me.
My jaw tightens immediately.
The name feels like ice water poured down my spine. Seraphina. The leash my father’s been tightening since I was old enough to understand the word heir. The thought of being with anyone other than Sloane; now that I’ve had a taste….it makes me sick.
Theo glances over. He catches the shift in my expression. The guys do; they can tell from my expression. that it’s about Seraphina, the girl my father wants
me to marry.
I pocket the phone immediately, before Sloane picks that something is off. I smile like nothing’s changed. Because no one here ;especially not the girl in my
lap is going to see me truly livid.
We play two more rounds before the night winds down, and the Horsemen leave in a staggered exit, as they say their goodbyes. Theo makes a signal to me,
and I nod at him, to let him know I got it.
Sloane stays behind with me.
“You’re not running off?” I ask, pouring another drink.
“Not unless you’re kicking me out,” she says, crossing to the bar. “How about one more round.; just us.”
I nod in agreement, and she sits across from me now, with her eyes steady over the rim of her glass. The room feels quieter, heavier, the absence of the boisterous laughter of the guys casting the quiet glow in the room.
“What’s your biggest secret?” I ask.
She hesitates for a beat, and I know before she says it that whatever’s coming will shift something between us. She tucks her hair behind her ear, and

reveals a bomb on me;

“I’ve never… been with anyone before,” she says finally.
The words that keave her lips has the whiskey burning hotter on the way down my throat, as I stare at her in disbelief. My mind thinks back to the absolute weapon of a body she has, and I find myself struggling to believe.
I lean back, watching her, letting the silence stretch for sometime, until she shifts slightly in her seat. “You telling me because you want me to play nice?”
“No,” she says, chin lifting. “I’m telling you because you’ll probably figure it out, and I’d rather you heard it from me, and not from Matt.”
Something dark and slow curls in my chest.
I lean forward, elbows on my knees. “Then maybe, scholarship girl…” My voice drops, dangerously soft. “…you’ve been studying the wrong things. I could
teach you. Everything.”
Her breath hitches, like she choked on her spit.
We don’t move.
We don’t break eye contact, and the fire crackles behind us, as the whiskey sits forgotten between us; and the tension’s a wire stretched so tight it could snap with one wrong breath, and so tick, you could cut it in half.
And that’s exactly where I leave her.
