CHAPTER 101
MON
“I’m just gonna grab my bag. Five minutes.” She said it as she walked into the apartment.
“I’ll come with you.”
“You don’t have to.”
“I know. I’m still coming.”
She sighed but didn’t argue. Her apartment was warm, stuffy, that closed-up-all-day kind of smell hanging in the air. I walked through the living room while she disappeared into the bedroom.
I followed her. Jamie was standing in front of the closet, pulling things out with surgical precision. A pair of pants. Two shirts. A black dress.
“That’s it?” I asked.
“That’s enough.”
“Jamie, you’re staying four nights.”
“Exactly. Four nights. Not four months.”
I grabbed the suitcase off the bed and started unzipping it.
“What are you doing?”
“Helping.”
“Simon, don’t.”
I ignored her. Pulled open the drawers. T-shirts, sweatpants, lace bras I recognized immediately.
“This one.” I held up a black piece. “This is coming.”
“Put that back.”
“I’m bringing it.”
“Simon!”
“It’s comfortable. You’ll thank me.”
She snatched the bra out of my hand, face red, but I was already grabbing something else. A silk dress. A wool coat. A pair of heels.
You’re stuffing my bag.”
“You re underestimating your own needs.”
“I know what I need.”

“I disagree.” I zipped it shut hard. “Done.”

nie looked at the suitcase, then at me, with an expression caught somewhere between irritation and something she didn’t want to admit.
“You’re insane.”
She smiled, and then we left.
The penthouse was lit up when we walked in. The smell of home cooking filled the air. Lily came running before the door was even all the way open.
“MISS JAMIE!”
She launched herself at Jamie’s legs, and Jamie dropped the bag to scoop her up.
“Hey, princess.”
“You came! You actually came!”
“I came.”
Sam appeared behind her, chewing on something.
“Are you gonna live here now?”
“No, Sam. Just staying a few days.”
“How many?”
“Four.”
Lily frowned and held up her hand, counting on her fingers. One, two, three, four.
“That’s not a lot.”
“I thought so too,” I said from behind her.
Jamie shot me a warning look. I ignored it.
“Dinner’s almost ready. Mary said she was leaving when you got here,” Lily said.
“I’ll go talk to her.”
Mary was in the kitchen, apron still on.
“Everything’s ready, Mr. Hart. The kids ate, brushed their teeth, and they’re going to bed at nine.”
Thank you. Mary.”
She looked at Jamie, then at me, and smiled.

“It’s good to have you here, Miss Collins.”
Thank you, Mary.”
Mary grabbed her purse and left. The door clicked shut, and the house was just ours.
Jamie picked the guest room. The one next to mine.
I carried her bag in there, even though every cell in my body wanted to take it to the room at the end of the hall.
“The closet’s big.” I opened the doors. “You can use all of it.”
“Thanks.”
“There are extra hangers on the top shelf.”
“I see them.”
“And towels in the bathroom.”
“Simon.”
“What?”
“You’re hovering.”
I shrugged. She grabbed a shirt and started folding. I should’ve left. Instead, I stepped closer to the closet, pretending to check something on the top shelf.
When she turned around, she was trapped between my body and the wood.
The air shifted.
Jamie looked up. We were close. Too close.
“Four nights,” I murmured.
“Exactly. Four nights. Doesn’t mean we’re gonna play house.”
“I know.”
“The kids are here.”
“I know.”
“So behave.
