CHAPTER 102

The next morning, I found Simon in the kitchen with a spatula in one hand and his phone propped against the coffee maker.
Kelly’s voice came through the speaker while he tried to flip an omelet without taking his eyes off Lily who was pouring a criminal amount of syrup over her pancakes.
“I interviewed the new nanny yesterday afternoon,” Kelly said. “She seemed great. Excellent résumé, her references got back to me right away, and she was very polite. She should be arriving any minute.”
Simon slid the omelet onto Jack’s plate.
“Perfect. Thanks, Kelly.”
“Did you just thank me before eight in the morning, boss?”
“Don’t get used to it.”
“Too late. I’m documenting the date.”
He ended the call and looked up at me.
“Coffee?”
“Please.”
“The magic word. I like it.”
“I’m a polite houseguest.”
The intercom buzzed before Simon could answer. He pressed the button on the panel beside the refrigerator.
“Mr. Hart,” the doorman said. “Miss Chloe Bennett is here. She says she’s interviewing for the nanny position.”
“Send her up. Thank you.”
Lily dropped her fork.
“Is Mary leaving today?”
The excitement vanished from her face so quickly that my chest tightened.
“No, sweetheart,” Simon said, crouching beside her chair. “Mary’s staying through Thursday. Chloe’s here to meet everyone and learn the routine before Mary leaves for her trip.”
“I like Mary.”
“So do I. But she has to go to Paris, remember?”

Lily nodded, though she didn’t look convinced. Simon brushed his thumb over her cheek, wiping away a drop of syrup.
The elevator doors opened a few minutes later.
The woman who stepped out looked to be in her mid-twenties. She was blonde, with delicate, almost angelic features and the kind of sweet smile that would put any mother instantly at ease. She wore dark jeans and a cream-colored top fitted enough to emphasize her generous curves.
Something strange twisted in my stomach.
It was quick. Irrational. Ridiculous.
I ignored it.
“Mr. Hart?” she asked.
“Simon. Come in.”
She walked over and held out her hand.
“Chloe Bennett. It’s a pleasure to meet you.”
“Likewise.”
Simon shook her hand, then gestured toward the children.
“The little one who looks like she’s assessing your moral character is Lily. The two already plotting to use you for dessert before dinner are Jack and Sam.”
“Hey,” Jack protested.
“I hadn’t even thought of that yet,” Sam said.
Chloe laughed, and it sounded genuine.
“Hi, guys. Kelly told me you like dinosaurs, soccer, and stories about princesses who don’t need rescuing.”
Lily finally smiled.
“I like princesses with swords.”
“Those are the best kind.”
Simon rested a hand on my waist.
“And this is Jamie, my girlfriend.”
I turned to stare at him.
My girlfriend.
He said it with the ease of a man who had been dating me for years. There was no teasing smile, no wink, nothing to suggest he was joking.

Chloe offered me her hand.
Nice to meet you, Jamie.”
“You too.”
My voice came out steady. A miracle.

I could have corrected Simon. I should have corrected him. Instead, I left his hand exactly where it was.
“Mary should be here in a few minutes,” he continued. “She’s the temporary nanny, and she’ll walk you through the routine, school schedules, dietary restrictions, and everything else you need to know. Today is mostly about helping everyone adjust.”
“Perfect. I’m excited to get started.”
Chloe crouched in front of Lily and asked if she could see the book Lily had left on the chair. Within two minutes, all three children were talking at once.
She seemed patient. Attentive. Good with them.
That should have settled the uneasiness in my stomach.
It didn’t.
Mary arrived a few minutes later, and Simon handed me my coat.
“We need to go, baby. Before you find a contractual loophole to justify being even later.”
“I’m never late.”
“You spent twenty-three minutes in the shower.”
“Were you timing me?”
“I considered coming in to make sure you were okay.”
“How touching.”
He smiled and guided me toward the elevator, his hand still at the small of my back.

We had barely pulled out of the garage when I looked through the window and said, “She’s very pretty.”
“Yeah.”
I waited.
He kept driving.
“That’s it?”
Simon glanced at me.

“I didn’t hire her. Kelly did.”
Ndidn’t ask who hired her.”
“Not out loud.”
“I was making an observation.”
“Are you jealous?”
“No.”
“You answered too fast.”
“Because the answer is obvious.”
“It is to me.”
“Good.”
“You’re jealous.”
“I am not jealous of the nanny.”
“The pretty nanny.”
“Simon.”
“Blonde.”
“Stop.”
“Great tits.”
I snapped my head toward him.
“So you noticed.”
His smile spread slowly.
I’d walked straight into that one. With both feet.
“I have eyes, Jamie.”
“Congratulations.”
“I also have preferences.”
“I don’t want to hear them.”

“Brunette. Attorney. Bossy. Looks incredible in my shirt and terrible at pretending she isn’t jealous.”
I tried to hold on to my glare. I failed when he caught my chin and stole a quick kiss.

“You’re unbearably smug.”
and you’re my girlfriend.”
The smile slipped from my lips.
“About that…”
“You didn’t correct me.”
“The kids were right there.”
“They already think we’re having a baby.”
“And that’s supposed to help?”
