The driver took Chloe home shortly after.

The second the elevator doors closed, Jamie let out a sigh and headed upstairs. I followed without a word.

She stayed quiet until we reached my office.

Then she let loose.

“I feel awful.”

I closed the door behind us.

Jamie paced the office from one end to the other as she talked, replaying the whole conversation with Chloe like she was presenting evidence to a jury.

I leaned against the desk and crossed my arms.

“I wasn’t trying to humiliate her, Simon. I just wanted to talk about the clothes. In private. I thought I was being polite.”

“You were.”

“But you saw how she reacted.”

“I did.”

Jamie stopped in front of me.

“Do you think I was mean?”

I uncrossed my arms.

“Come here.”

“Simon, I’m serious.”

I took her hand and pulled her toward me.

She let out a small sound of surprise when her body hit mine. I wrapped an arm around her waist.

“Listen to me, babe. Bad people don’t usually waste time wondering if they’re bad.”

She frowned.

“That doesn’t mean I didn’t screw up.”

“No. But it means you need to stop beating yourself up over telling the nanny to dress more appropriately.” I squeezed her waist. “You’re one of the fairest people I know. If Chloe’s making you uncomfortable in your own home, we should just fire her.”

Her eyes went wide.

re her?”

“Yes.”

“No! Simon, you saw how she was. I would never do that to someone in that state.”

She tried to pull away.

I didn’t let her.

Jamie ended up turning her back to me, and I slid both arms around her waist, keeping her against my

chest.

I buried my face near her neck and breathed in her perfume.

“You shouldn’t be so nice.”

“And you shouldn’t be so heartless.”

I smiled against her skin.

“Works for me.”

She gave my arm a weak elbow.

“Didn’t you feel even a little bad for her when she talked about her dad?”

My smile faded.

“Not even a little.”

Jamie turned her face to look at me.

“Simon!”

“What?”

“That was horrible.”

I frowned.

\”Jamie, she’s the nanny. I barely know this woman. Why should I believe everything she says just because

she started crying?”

She managed to turn around in my arms.

“If you don’t trust her, why leave the kids with her?”

“I didn’t say I don’t trust her.”

“You basically just did.”

“No.” I tilted my head. “Let’s just say she’s on probation.”

mie stared at me.

“Probation?”

“If she does her job well, great. If she slips up, I’ll fire her without a second thought.”

“Wow.”

“What?”

“And here I was, thinking you were a boss with a slightly softer heart.”

I brought my face close to hers until our foreheads touched.

“But I am.”

She blinked.

“You are?”

“With you.”

The corner of her mouth twitched.

“That was incredibly cheesy.”

“And it worked.”

“It didn’t work.”

I kissed her neck.

Jamie tried to hide a smile.

“Simon…”

“Mm?”

“We were having a serious conversation.”

“I’m still serious.”

I kissed the same spot again and felt her body relax against mine.

“Speaking of serious things…”

She immediately got suspicious.

“What?”

I let go of her waist and walked over to my desk.

me to start planning.”

“Planning what?”

I looked at her.

“Our wedding.”

Jamie went still.

I pulled a black card from my wallet and held it out to her.

She looked at the card. Then at me.

“What is that?”

“A card.”

“I can see it’s a card, Simon.”

“Then we’re making progress.”

She rolled her eyes and took it.

“What’s the limit?”

“There isn’t one.”

Her eyes snapped back to me.
