CHAPTER 220
MON
Jamie was standing in the kitchen, finishing her coffee while trying to fasten an earring and check something on her phone at the same time.
“You heading out now?” I asked.
“I’ve got training with the new paralegals. I figured I’d go in early so I can wrap up before lunch.”
Lily was sitting at the table, way too focused on drowning a piece of waffle in syrup.
“You’re coming back today, right, Miss Jamie?”
Jamie immediately put her phone away.
“Of course I am, sweetheart.”
She kissed the top of Lily’s head, then made her rounds past Sam and Jack, handing out goodbyes and reminders nobody was probably listening to.
When she got to me, she pointed toward the living room.
“Don’t forget Chloe’s flowers.”
“I won’t.”
“I want her to know I’m sorry about what happened yesterday.”
“She’ll know.”
Jamie nodded.
Then she leaned in and gave me a quick peck.
Too quick.
When she pulled back, I gave her a half smile.
“What?” she asked.
“Nothing.”
. She grabbed her bag.
“See you later.”
“See you.”
She walked to the elevator.
I waited two seconds.

Then I followed.
mie pressed the button and looked at me when I stopped beside her.
“Where are you going?”
“Walking you out.”
“To the elevator?”
“Exactly.”
The doors opened.
She stepped in.
So did I.
I hit the button for the garage.
Jamie frowned.
“Simon, what are you doing?”
The doors closed.
I didn’t answer.
I grabbed her waist, spun her around, and pressed her against the elevator wall.
“Simon…”
I kissed her.
The complaint died between our mouths.
It wasn’t the polite little peck she’d given me in the kitchen.

My mouth took hers with hunger, and Jamie let out a surprised sound before grabbing the front of my shirt. I tilted my head, deepening the kiss, feeling her tongue meet mine.
The elevator started to descend.
I didn’t care.
One hand stayed firm on her waist. The other slid up to the back of her neck, keeping her close while I kissed her like she was leaving for a week, not a few hours.
When the elevator stopped, we were both out of breath.
The doors opened onto the garage.
Jamie blinked a few times.

Her lipstick was slightly smudged.
miled against her mouth.
“Now we’re good.”
She took a deep breath.
“Now we’re good what?”
I ran my thumb slowly along the corner of her mouth.
“That’s a proper goodbye kiss.”
“You’re ridiculous.”
She stepped out of the elevator, still flustered.
The doors started to close, but before they did, she shot me that look that was supposed to intimidate me and only made me smile wider.
“See you in a bit, Counselor.”
“Idiot.”
The doors started to close again, and through the gap, I saw my driver appear in the garage lobby and walk toward Jamie.
She was still fixing her hair.
My smile grew.
I rode back up alone, leaning against the elevator wall, absurdly pleased with myself.
When the doors opened on the ground floor, Chloe was waiting.
She stepped in.
“Good morning, Mr. Simon.”
“Good morning, Chloe.”
My eyes moved over her quickly.
She looked a lot more appropriate for work than she had the other days.
I didn’t comment.
We rode up in silence.
When we walked into the apartment, Chloe took off her coat and immediately noticed the flowers on the table.
She stopped.

Looked at the bouquet.
Then at me.
I cleared my throat.
“They’re for you.”
Her face lit up.
“For me?”
“Yeah.”
Chloe walked over and picked up the bouquet, beaming.
“They’re beautiful, Mr. Hart.”
She smelled one of the roses and smiled.
“How did you know I like flowers?”
“I actually didn’t.”
Her smile stayed.
“Jamie bought them.”
Her expression changed.
Just a little.
But it changed.
“Oh.”
“She wanted to apologize for what happened yesterday.”
Chloe took a deep breath.
“Right. Yesterday.”
She set the flowers back on the table.
“That was nice of her.”
“She felt bad afterward.”
Chloe ran her fingers over a petal.
“So did I.”
I stayed quiet.

She took another breath.
be honest, Lwas pretty upset. I’ve never felt that humiliated at work since I moved to New York. I didn’t want any of that to happen, but…”
She hesitated.
“But?”
“Miss Jamie was a little harsh with me.”
I narrowed my eyes.
Chloe noticed.
“I know she didn’t mean to,” she added quickly. “Maybe she’s just a little…”
She waited.
“A little what?”
“Jealous.”
I almost laughed.
“My fiancée?”
Chloe nodded carefully.
“That was just the impression I got.”
“Jamie is probably one of the most secure women I’ve ever met.”
“Oh.”
The word came out small.
Chloe dropped her eyes to the flowers.
“I see.”
There was a silence.
Then she touched her own shirt.
“But I heard what she said. Look.”
I didn’t look.
“I’m wearing a bra today.”
I kept my eyes on her face.
“You didn’t need to tell me that.”

orry. I just wanted you to know I respected her request.”
“Honestly, I didn’t even notice yesterday that you weren’t wearing one.”
She blinked.
“Right. Of course. Because you’re such a respectful man. Surry, I didn’t mean to imply…”
“What you wear under your clothes isn’t my business.”
She stopped.
I kept my voice even.
“If Jamie talked to you about appropriateness during work hours, that’s something you two can work out between yourselves. No need to loop me in.”
She went still for a second.
“Of course, Mr. Hart.”
“Great.”
I started walking toward the kitchen.
“The kids are done with breakfast. Lily’s probably going to try to convince you there’s no school today.”
“Mr. Hart?”
I stopped.
Turned.
Chloe was still standing near the flowers.
“Yes?”
She seemed to hesitate.
“Since we’re on the subject of… appropriateness…”
Something in her tone made me stay put.
“What?”
“I wasn’t sure if I should mention this.”
“Then you probably shouldn’t.”
She let out a nervous little laugh.
“It’s just that I saw you two.”

My face went serious.
aw what?”
“You and Miss Jamie.”
Silence.
Chloe folded her hands in front of her body.
“The night I slept over.”
My jaw tightened.
“Go on.”
“I woke up and came out of the room. I ended up seeing you two… together.”
She paused, carefully embarrassed.
“Having sex.”
I stared at her.
Chloe quickly raised her hands.
