FAKE DATING WITH BENEFITS MY BILLIONAIRE BOSS (Ophelia Corrigan) novel Chapter 136

CHAPTER 136

AMIE

My mom opened the door to my old room and turned on the lamp.

“I changed the sheets last week.”

I looked around.

“You need anything? Tea? Warm milk?”

“Mom, I’m thirty-two.”

“And?”

I smiled despite myself.

“Nothing. I’m fine.”

She studied me for a few seconds.

“You want to tell me what happened? You didn’t call off the engagement with my favorite son-in-law, did you? Because I refuse to go through that twice. I mean, technically you didn’t end it the first time… but you get what I mean. Now tell me. What happened?”

“We’ll talk tomorrow.”

“That means ‘never’ in daughter language.”

She took a deep breath.

“But fine.”

She came over, kissed my forehead, and squeezed my shoulder.

“So sleep. Your dad’s already out and I’m going to pretend I’m not dying of curiosity.”

“Thanks, Mom.”

“And, Jamie?”

“Hm?”

“Fighting before the wedding doesn’t mean something’s wrong between you two. Sometimes it means the opposite. You’re learning to work through your differences before you take the next step.”

I sighed.

“I know.”

“Good. Because I like that man, and it would be really inconvenient to have to hate him now.”

I laughed.

“Good night, Mom.”

Sood night. sweetheart.”

She closed the door.

I was alone.

I kicked off my shoes, changed into an old T-shirt that was still in the drawer, and lay down on the narrow

bed.

My phone was on the pillow next to me.

I looked at it.

The whole thing came rushing back.

The screenshots.

The photo.

Someone had gotten into a private conversation between me and Ethan.

I grabbed the phone and scrolled through my contacts until I found Maya.

Maya had gone to school with me for two years before she realized she hated law and switched to tech. Now she worked in cybersecurity and had the brilliant gift of understanding computers like they were extensions of her own brain.

I called.

She picked up on the fourth ring.

“If this is a wedding invitation at eleven at night, I accept.”

“Wait, how do you know I’m getting married?”

I frowned.

“How do you know I’m getting married?”

“Instagram, babe. I saw the photo of the hot guy proposing to you on the beach. Hard to forget.”

I couldn’t help smiling.

“I need a favor.”

“That sounds less fun.”

“I think someone got into my phone.”

Her tone shifted instantly.

“Into it how?”

I explained the screenshots. I didn’t give her every detail of the fight with Simon, but I said enough.

id you click any weird links recently?”

“Not that I remember.”

“Install anything outside the app store? Configuration profile? Open a suspicious attachment?”

“No.”

“Leave it with me. Don’t mess with it too much tonight. Bring it by early tomorrow.”

“Your place?”

“Yeah. Seven-thirty. I’ve got equipment here and I can make a copy before I start digging. If there’s something installed, I want to preserve evidence.”

“You’re scary smart with this stuff.”

“You’re exaggerating.”

I smiled.

“Thank you.”

“And change your passwords using another device. Start with your main email.”

“I will.”

“See you tomorrow, girl.”

“See you tomorrow! And thanks again!”

I hung up.

I stared at the screen, trying to find an explanation that made sense.

Simon had access to my phone all the time, but obviously it wasn’t him. If he wanted to read my messages,

he wouldn’t need to screenshot them and send them to himself from an anonymous number.

Ethan had no reason either.

Then I thought of Chloe.

In the kitchen.

I had handed her my phone for a few seconds so she could take a picture of Lily.

The possibility surfaced and died almost instantly.

It had been too fast. I was right there, a few steps away. Chloe would’ve had to find the right conversation, capture those exact messages, erase any trace of what she’d done, and still hand the phone back without me noticing.

All in a matter of seconds.

didn’t make sense.

I ruled it out.

It was probably something digital. A virus, spyware, maybe some link I’d opened without realizing.

That seemed like the most logical explanation.

What I couldn’t understand was something else.

Who would have that much interest in turning Simon against me?
