CHAPTER 147
NAMIE
When the elevator doors opened, I expected to see a hallway.
Instead, a blast of cold wind hit me in the face.
I blinked.
We were on the roof.
And in the middle of the helipad, gleaming beneath the city lights, sat a silver helicopter.
I stopped dead.
“Oh my God. Are we going for a helicopter ride?”
My smile must have looked ridiculous, because his appeared instantly.
“We are.”
“This is the surprise?”
“The first part.”
“There’s more?”
“Jamie, you’re terrible at surprises.”
“Because I like knowing things.”
“I know. It’s one of your flaws.”
I smacked his arm.
A man in a dark suit was waiting for us beside the helicopter. As we approached, he greeted Simon.
“Good evening, Mr. Hart. Everything’s ready. Your route is cleared, and conditions are excellent.”
“Thank you, Ryan.”
Then he handed Simon something.
The keys.
My smile vanished.
“Wait.”
Simon kept walking.
“Simon.”

“What?”
Why did he give you the keys?”
He opened the helicoptèr door.
I stayed exactly where I was.
“You’re flying?”
“I am.”
“You’re flying a helicopter?”
“That is generally how it works when someone hands the pilot the keys.”
“Don’t be a smart-ass. Since when do you know how to fly?”
He turned to face me, one hand braced on the open door.
“Since I was thirty.”
“You never told me that.”
“You never asked if I knew how to fly a helicopter.”
“Because every time I’ve seen you in one, there was a pilot. I thought…”
Simon smiled.
“Come on.”
I looked at the helicopter.
“Are you good?”
“Jamie.”
“It’s an important question.”
“I’ve had my license for years.”
“That didn’t answer the question.”
He walked over and cupped my face in both hands.
“I would never put you in danger.”
Damn it. I trusted him way too much.
“Okay.”
“Okay?”

New minutes later, I was strapped into the seat beside him with a headset on, my heart pounding while Simon ran through checks that looked far too complicated for me to understand.
“Ready?” His voice came through tny headset.
“Absolutely not.”
He laughed.
The rotors picked up speed.
My stomach dropped when we lifted away from the building.
“Oh my God!”
I grabbed the seat.
Simon glanced at me.
“Look out the window.”
I did.
And forgot how to breathe.
All of New York was spread out beneath us.
Manhattan glittered as if someone had spilled millions of diamonds across an island. Towers rose against the dark sky, windows blazing with light, cars reduced to tiny glowing dots while the river reflected the city back at itself.
“Simon…”
“Beautiful?”
“This is unbelievably beautiful.”
My fear disappeared.
I leaned closer to the window, grinning like a kid.
We flew over the city for several minutes.
And maybe the most ridiculous part of all was Simon.
My Simon.
Sitting there in a suit, his sleeves pulled slightly back at the wrists, flying a goddamn helicopter over Manhattan as if it were just one more absurdly impressive thing he knew how to do.
Whenever he could, he took one hand off the controls for a few seconds and rested it on my thigh.

The first time, I looked down.
en at him.
I smiled and covered his hand with mine.
For a few minutes, we stayed like that.
New York beneath us.
His hand on my leg.
My heart stupidly full.
Until I realized the buildings were falling away behind us.
I frowned.
“Simon?”
“Hmm?”
“Where are we going?”
He didn’t answer.
Of course he didn’t..
A while later, we began descending toward a property surrounded by trees.
I spotted an illuminated helipad in the middle of an enormous stretch of green.
“Where are we?”
Simon stayed focused on the landing.
“Simon, why did we come all the way out here?”
“Because I wanted you out of that apartment for one night.”
I stared at him.
“All this for one night away from home?”
The corner of his mouth lifted.

“No kids. No nanny. No work. No one knocking on the door. Just you and me until tomorrow morning.”
The helicopter touched down smoothly.
He shut off the engine and finally looked at me.
“For the next few hours, you’re all mine.”

$5 wood f
My stomach did that delicious little drop.
Taughed and opened the door.
Outside, the place looked like something out of a movie.
An enormous field surrounded the property. A stone path wound through the trees, lined with torches. leading to a glowing lodge made of wood and glass in the distance.
A staff member was waiting for us.
“Good evening, Mr. Hart. Miss Collins. Welcome. Everything has been prepared as requested.”
Simon shook his hand.
“Thank you.”
The man gestured toward the lodge.
“Dinner is ready, the fireplace is lit, and the presidential suite has been prepared. The staff will remain in the service house on the far side of the property. If you need anything at all, just use the house phone.”
I looked around.
There was no one else.
No other guests.
No music.
No voices.
Just us.
“You booked the entire place?”
