The elevator doors slid open, and I stepped into Simon’s apartment, still trying to decide whether I was pissed or relieved that I’d left early.
Damn it. The night had been going so well until those guys showed up and ruined everything.
The girls had promised me they wouldn’t pull something like that.
I tossed my purse onto Simon’s obscenely expensive console table and kicked off my heels, sighing in relief the second my bare feet hit the cool floor.
“Simon?”
Nothing.
I frowned.
The kitchen lights were on.
I headed that way and found him braced against the counter, both palms flat on the marble, his head hanging
low.
“Simon?”
He slowly lifted his head.
His eyes were red. Unfocused.
And something about him was off.
“Get out. Chloe.”
I stopped dead.
“Chloe?”
His jaw tightened.
“I told you to get the hell out. Now.”
The words came out in such a rough growl that I froze for a second.
“Simon, it’s me.”
He blinked.
Once.

But he kept staring at me like his brain was running a few seconds behind his eyes.
I approached him carefully.
“Simon, are you okay?”
He straightened abruptly.
Before I could react, his hand closed around my arm and yanked me toward him.
My back hit the counter.
“Simon!”
He stopped.
His face was inches from mine.
And then something shifted.
His eyes finally focused on me.
“Jamie?”
My heart slowed a little.
“Yeah. Jamie.”
He stared at me like he needed to make sure I was real.
I took him in. His shirt was half unbuttoned, his hair was a mess, and he looked like a man who’d gotten into one hell of a fight with a bottle of whiskey and lost.
“Jesus.” I touched his face. “You drank way too much.”
“It’s not that bad.”
I slipped out from between him and the island and opened the fridge.
“Drink this.”
I handed him a bottle of water.
He looked at it like I’d offered him poison.
“No.”
“Simon.”

“Sull don’t want it.”
I twisted off the cap.
“Drink.”
Instead, he caught me around the waist and pulled me against him.
A startled laugh escaped me.
“Simon!”
“I wanted you.”
His face disappeared into the crook of my neck.
The words came out muffled against my skin, and despite myself, something warm curled low in my
stomach.
“You have me.”
“No.” His arms tightened around my waist. “I wanted you in a different way.”
Then he kissed the side of my neck.
Once.
Twice.
The third kiss landed right below my ear, and I scrunched up with a laugh because his stubble tickled.
“Stop.” I pushed at his shoulder, fighting a smile. “Simon, you’re drunk.”
I’m affectionate,”
“You’re a menace like this.”
Your hot menace.”
He lifted his head and gave me that lazy, devastating smile.
God help me.
I pressed the water bottle against his chest
“Come on. You need a shower.”

Then I don’t need one.”
I grabbed his hand.
“Move it. Hart.”
He followed me upstairs with the obedience of a man who was cooperating solely because he liked the person bossing him around. Twice, I felt him stumble. The second time, I stopped and looked back at him.
“Are you sure all you had was alcohol?”
His face tightened like the question required way more concentration than he had available.
“Whiskey.”
“How much?”
He thought about it.
“A lot.”
I muttered a curse and tugged him through the bedroom, across the walk-in closet, and toward the bathroom.
The closet light was already on.
I frowned.
Had he left it that way?
Probably. Simon, in his current state, looked perfectly capable of forgetting his own name.
1 opened the bathroom door and turned on the shower. Steam began fogging the glass.
“Shoes” I ordered.
He just stared at me.
“Take them off

“You like me bossy.”
His gaze traveled slowly down my body before returning to my face

“I do,” he said, his voice rougher now. “I fucking love it.”
Heat rushed into my cheeks.
“Shoes, Simon.”
He took them off one at a time, then started unbuttoning his shirt.
I sighed and stepped closer to help.
Terrible idea.
The second my fingers brushed his chest, Simon’s hands closed around my hips.
“Don’t even start.”
“I didn’t start anything.”
“I know you.”
I looked up at him.
